I have taught at a most levels from informal (1st through 7th ) at the Living Arts and Science Center in Lexington, at high school level (biology and Integrated Science) and College, BCTC, Midway College and UK. I am also KTIP certified in high school biology. I have many years experience in research, primarily related to infectious disease and regeneration and genomics in the axolotl. I am a member of the Kentucky Association for Environmental Education. I started a non profit 4 years ago and so I'm very familiar with food issues and society.
Understanding is the key to learning. My approach to teaching is Socratic. This simply means I ask the student questions to find out what they understand or have trouble understanding. I also try and use mnemonics when I can, as well as practical examples to elaborate on a challenging topic. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
