My name is Shelby, and I am science teacher. I teach biology and integrated science. I have my B.S. in Biology and a M.A. in Education. I have spent time doing research in entomology, not only working in KY, but also training with experts in six museums in five countries including the British Natural History Museum.
I have tutored many students over the last 10 years in the following areas: biological sciences, evolution, general biology, entomology, botany, general chemistry, mathematics, Spanish, writing, public speaking, GED preparation, English, and history. I have also spent time reviewing papers for many friends and colleagues (including grammar corrections for international colleagues). I have gained experience teaching children about insects and tutoring elementary and middle school students in science, math, English, geography, Spanish, and Social Studies.
Both of my parents are teachers, and I developed a passion for educating others at a very young age. Nothing is quite as exciting as witnessing the moment when the light bulb goes on. I believe that everyone is capable of learning when excitement is created, and a subject is simplified to each student. No two students are the same or necessarily learn in the same way.

This semester while at UK I was really struggling with Biology, I found Shelby and sent her a request for Biology help and she responded right away. We started as soon as possible and she helped me better understand biology immediately. She's really good at explaining things to make it easier to learn, she also gave me great studying techniques for my exams. Overall Shelby is a great tutor and definitely recommend her!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I am currently finishing up my Master's degree in Entomology. Specifically, I study systematics. This includes a great deal of genetics and molecular work as evolution is driven by genetic changes. I have taken genetics classes during undergraduate and graduate school. I have both classroom and practical experience with both subject matter, applied research, and analysis. I have experience with both traditional and next generation sequencing techniques.
