About Ashley

Hello! Thank you for considering me for your tutoring needs.

My name is Ashley. My husband and I have recently moved to Lexington, Kentucky from West Virginia.

I am a 2013 graduate of Marshall University, where I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in comprehensive Elementary Education (K-6) and an additional certification in Mild and Moderate Mental Impairments. While in school, I also participated in a program teaching science to elementary students in an after school setting.

Working with children is definitely my passion in life. I believe that all children are capable of learning and I love planning and providing activities and lessons that help them reach their full potential and construct meaningful knowledge. I believe that children learn best when they have a part in constructing and discovering their own answers and have hands-on, engaging encounters with concrete examples. I love learning new ways to present material that will help each student master the content.

I am willing to work with parents and children to accommodate any scheduling and individualized needs.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have an additional state certification (both in West Virginia and Kentucky)to work with mild and moderate special education students. I have experience working with many students with ADD/ADHD in elementary schools both throughout my undergraduate work and student teaching. I am familiar with methodology and curriculum modifications and accommodations that are helpful for children with ADD/ADHD and will help ensure their success.

Aspergers

During my student teaching experience in a mild special education setting, I worked at a 1:1 ratio with a student with Asperger's. I am very familiar with the traits of children with Asperger's and know different delivery methods to help them master the content in ways that will keep them engaged. I have also studied Asperger's, as well as other conditions on the autism spectrum, in many classes.

Autism

I have a certification in mild and moderate special education. I have worked with many students on the autism spectrum throughout my undergraduate work at Marshall University and in public schools during my student teaching experience. I have worked both in small group classrooms and at a 1:1 ratio with students with autism. I have practiced ABA methodology and seen great success with this type of information delivery.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a bachelor's degree from Marshall University in comprehensive elementary education. In addition, I have valid teaching certificates in both West Virginia and Kentucky. I have passed all necessary Praxis exams for certification in both states; the elementary education and PLT tests within eight points of a perfect score. I have worked with children in public school settings and after-school settings.

Phonics

During my undergraduate studies at Marshall University, I have had many language arts classes that dealt primarily with the teaching of phonics and various approaches to teaching it. Further, I have worked with a variety of programs and teaching methods in elementary public school classrooms. I have also observed the Ashlock program in elementary classrooms to help students with phonemic awareness.

Social Studies

In my undergraduate studies at Marshall University, I had a course specific to social studies content and teaching practices in which we studied the various content taught at multiple grade levels, prepared lessons and units, etc. In my student teaching experience, I taught social studies in the general education setting and helped special education students with social studies in a resource rom pull-out setting. Furthermore, I passed the social studies section of the Praxis exam required for state teaching certification in Kentucky.

Special Needs

In addition to a BA in elementary education from Marshall University, I also have a concentration and additional certification and state licensure in mild and moderate mental impairments. During my student teaching experience, I taught in both a mild special education setting in a resource room environment, in which I worked with students with varying special needs (mental impairments, learning disabilities, Asperger's, Autism spectrum disorders, ADD/ADHD), and a severe/profound classroom in which I worked with students with profound mental and physical disabilities. Working with students with special needs is truly my passion in life.

Study Skills

I am a very organized person in many aspects of my life, especially when it comes to school. In my student teaching experience, I talked with and helped my fourth grade students practice study skills with regards to classroom content and the upcoming state standardized assessment. I feel confident that I could help students, both general education and special needs, learn and master study skills that will best help their individual needs.
