After working as a banker for 22 years and teaching Junior Achievement classes in elementary schools, I went back to school to get my teaching certificate. I have been teaching in Fayette County for five years. My experience includes teaching all subjects for kindergarten through fifth grade. While I enjoy teaching all subject areas, reading is my area of specialization. My master's degree in education included a literacy concentration or reading focus. This reading endorsement allows me to teach reading and writing to K-12.
My approach to tutoring means taking the time to get to know my students and their families. I want a clear idea of the goals of each. Together, we will develop a plan of action to help students reach their goals and become academically successful. I plan lessons that are interesting, engaging, fun, and have relevance to the real world.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught in elementary schools for five years. During this time, I have taught all subject areas. I teach across the curriculum, meaning I incorporate math, science, and social studies into reading instruction. I make it a point to stress that vocabulary has multiple meanings across these subject areas.
I also tutored through my graduate program and provided Saturday tutoring at my previous school.
My classroom teaching experience includes teaching elementary math. I taught math to second and third graders for four years. Math tutoring would involve using manipulatives and other strategies to help students become more confident and successful math students.
I have taught reading for five years, including as a reading interventionist for one year. Additionally, my area of concentration was reading in my graduate studies.
