About Alice

I worked as a tutor in the Dartmouth College Writing/Research/IT Center, serving both undergraduate and graduate students. I learned Spanish to a high level of fluency beginning as a young adult; I understand learning language and have tutored English to speakers of other languages. I also teach a beginning conversational Spanish class in Winchester. I have an innate fluency in standardized tests and can coach students through test logic and language. I took classes towards a Master's in Teaching from the Rossier School of Education, which was particularly helpful in showing me effective use of online platforms, as it was an online program.

I love learning how other students think, and helping people improve the clarity of their expression, presentation, logic and other aspects of their writing and speaking.

Having learned Spanish as as second language, I am familiar with both classroom methods and informal/conversational/immersive methods for improving language skills. My English skills are strong enough that I could tutor in a top-ranking college, but I understand how to look at the language through the eyes of someone who is not a native speaker. My husband's family are all native Spanish speakers; I tutored several ESL students in high school and helped organize ESL classes for refugee families in Houston when I lived there.

After studying Spanish in high school I backpacked through Mexico and Central America, staying both with locals and in hostels. In college I took undergraduate courses in Spanish literature and traveled to Guatemala as part of my research on international adoption from that country. Later, I married a Mexican man and lived with his Spanish-speaking family in Houston for 6 years. During that time I taught beginning conversational classes through a local "Leisure Learning" school; I'm doing this sort of adult beginning conversation class again this Fall in Winchester.

I did my husband's immigration paperwork without hiring a lawyer; it was complex, and I have a real handle on the process; during my time working at the refugee resettlement agency I did some tutoring for people preparing for citizenship exams.

I graduated with an undergraduate degree from an Ivy League school in Geography. Explaining social dynamics and helping students to express their ideas logically in this field are strong suits for me as a tutor.

Please be in touch to learn more and to set up a first lesson where we can get to know each other.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Spanish

I took Spanish in high school, backpacked in Central America, took linguistics and Spanish classes in college, and eventually married a Mexican man and lived with his family in Houston. I have a very high level of fluency without the advantage of being born into a bilingual home, so I understand what its like to learn as an adult. I love teaching, and am teaching Spanish through an adult education program here in Winchester, ky. I've also taught Spanish to 4th graders in the local homeschool group.

USCIS

I used to work at a refugee resettlement agency. We offered ESL and citizenship classes. I was a support teacher in these classes-- I mainly worked in resource development but I might substitute teach in these citizenship classes, for example. I also researched the best means for teaching students who need to pass tests for USCIS when I wrote a grant for our agency to get funding to do this work. For the purposes of the grant, I studied the test and the teaching methods beyond helping in the existing classes.
