Hello, my name is Barbara M., and I believe that I'm the tutor for you or your child! I recently retired after 28 years of teaching and moved with my husband to Georgetown. I already miss the contact I had with students and the opportunity to do what I do best---help kids learn!! I've had experience teaching students at all levels--preschool through high school--and I'm certified to teach in the areas of Hearing Impaired (Preschool--12th grade), Learning Disabilities/Social Emotional Disorders (Preschool--12th Grade), and Elementary Education. I have also tutored junior high and high school students in preparation for standardized tests (ACT and SAT).
Most of my experience has been as a resource teacher, and I've become an expert at using any resources I can find to reach children and help them succeed. I believe that learning can be fun, and I have loads of materials, games, and books that I've used in the past to help struggling students ENJOY learning and experience success in school, no matter what level.
My schedule is very flexible, and I'm anxious to meet you and your child and get started on the road to success!!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught at the elementary level for most of my 28 years. During that time, I have taught all subjects in my own classroom and also acted as a co-teacher, providing assisted instruction to special needs students within the regular classroom. I am experienced in teaching all content area subjects in Kindergarten through 5th Grade (Reading, Writing, English, Science, Social Studies, Math, and Study Skills.)
As a teacher of primary students, I have had extensive experience in teaching phonics to students. I have attended numerous workshops and used a variety of different programs to introduce phonics and word attack skills to young learners, and to review phonics concepts with older (late primary and intermediate) students. I believe that I have a strong background in phonics, and I have a number of different books and series that I've used in my classroom in the past to teach phonics.
My original teaching degree was in the area of Education of the Deaf. I student taught years ago at the Illinois School for the Deaf and am proficient in Sign Language. I have had experience teaching hearing impaired students from preschool age through high school, and have used both Signing Exact English and ASL in these situations. I have also taught Sign Language to regular education students on several occasions.
Though I am certified to teach regular elementary students, most of my experience has been with special needs students in both resource and self-contained settings. I have worked with students who have learning disabilities, hearing impairment, language delays, dyslexia, Asperger's Syndrome, ADHD, and a variety of other disabilities. On the whole, I believe that I have made a difference in the lives of these students and helped them to be the best that they can be!!
My most recent teaching experience has been as a resource teacher for 4th and 5th graders. At this age, students are just beginning to learn study skills, so I have had much experience in working with students to develop responsible learning habits and good study skills. I've become an expert at helping kids to remember information in different ways and to "read to learn" instead of "learning to read."
