About David

I spent 10 years working as a museum interpreter, working with school groups from 4th through 12th grade, so I have a demonstrated ability to work with wide age ranges. While my undergraduate degree is in English Literature, my love of and professional involvement in history give me grasp of that subject most people don't have, which I love to share. I am very good with children, individually and in groups. While not what one would call an authoritarian I seem to be able to keep children on task with little effort.

I am planning to go to graduate school for an MAT (masters of arts in teaching) but am unable to at this time for financial as well as family reasons.

As for my tutoring methods, I like to focus on problem areas to start with and if needed start over with basics, if required. But I need to access what each student's strengths and weaknesses are to see what is most apropos for any given situation. Not all children respond to the same stimulus and so I try to adapt to each situation. And if things are not working out I am more than willing to try to help find a solution, even if it means another tutor. I know I don't have the answer for every child.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I have a BA in English, and I worked for 10 years in museum interpretation. I have also done some local acting. I believe I can speak to any audience, as long as I have background information on the subject and can teach this to anyone with the desire to learn how to speak publicly. Public speaking is a compliment to any good education.

Writing

I have tutored college students as well as helping immigrants learn English for citizenship. I also work with school children 4-12 when I worked for the Kentucky Historical Society for 10 years.
