Western Kentucky University (Biology and Chemistry)
I graduated in May 2016 from Western Kentucky University with Bachelor degrees in Biology and Chemistry along with a degree from WKU's honors college.
I graduated in three years with a 3.96 GPA while being engaged in many other activities including performing research, volunteering for Habitat For Humanity, and serving as the vice president of the WKU Student Chapter of the American Chemistry Society. I am currently taking a year to work in the health field, coach cross country, and apply to medical school.
I have long been tutoring family members and fellow classmates for free and for pay. I also developed the science study section for an ACT study website. My general approach to tutoring is in line with my science training since it takes into account what research has shown to work, including explaining concepts and working problems rather than simply reading them, reviewing concepts at multiple points through the session to encourage long-term retention, and taking occasional breaks to keep the student engaged while working, among other approaches. I believe it is important to make accommodations for the goals and needs of each student, such as dyslexic students that I have tutored in the past. I would like to use tutoring as an opportunity to apply my love of learning and passion for teaching to help others achieve their academic goals and discover the joy of learning for themselves. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I began track in middle school and ran through high school. I still run 5ks and train for distance. I coached elementary and middle school kids in my junior and senior years of high school in track and field and have coached high schoolers during the past three summers.
