Now that I am an "empty nester", I miss the interaction I had with both of my sons while they were growing and gaining knowledge at home and in school! I also was quite active as a volunteer tutor while they were attending middle and high school. I still do some volunteer work, but not as much as when I was still in that "loop". I have a soft spot for middle school-aged kids, and think they are at the optimum phase of life to expand their horizons and potentially change their futures for the better. I have also experienced the role of "coach" although not in athletic capacity! I was an assistant coach for the middle school speech team for 2 years. It is an amazing and privileged thing to watch a student blossom right in front of your eyes.
My love of the English language has been with me since I could speak. My father taught English and he was a strong force on my life through adulthood. Even in his absence I still heed his lessons, advice and cautionary tales about the spoken and written word. English is truly an eclectic language that can be quite beautiful when used with respect and care. So many speakers of it today do not know or are not interested in its depth, history and many facets.
I am very much looking forward to tutoring once again and welcome any and all inquiries. The relationship between tutor and student is a unique one, and I see it as a type of partnership toward a greater goal. Both parties and the parents have much to learn from the tutoring exchange. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
have been a performer most of my life. I started participating in theatre and took voice lessons at an early age. I studied music during my undergraduate years and have always sung in a choir (high school/college/community). I spent a year living and studying in New York City at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy.
When my younger son started middle school, I was introduced to the world of Speech & Drama at the middle/high school level. ( I had never had an opportunity to participate during my school years!) I quickly fell in love with it and became Assistant Speech Team Coach.
Personally, I feel that public speaking can be crucial in the confidence and intuitiveness that any student needs for a lifetime of learning!
