About Laura

My name is Laura N. and I have 24 years of teaching experience with students with learning differences and ADHD. I spent 14 of those years at a private school that specializes in teaching students with learning differences. I have spent my career helping students who struggle find success. I am currently tutoring from my home office that is set up like a classroom. This space provides students a comfortable, quiet work space.

My single greatest impact while teaching is instilling confidence in students so they can be successful in life. I do that by providing encouragement and making connections with them. For example, I make connections by finding out that John likes to play basketball and subsequently going to a game or simply asking if he won his most recent game. I connected to a student recently because we both love biking. My family and I went to see him race at a bike race this fall. Now he keeps me posted on all of his races and events. Once students learn you are personally interested and invested in them, the encouragement you give them is more effective. When they know you believe in them, they are more apt to believe in themselves.

Differentiating instruction is the backbone of teaching students with learning differences. Determining a student's learning style is critical for finding the best way to teach him or her. A student's learning style -- whether it be auditory, visual or tactile/kinesthetic -- provides the teacher with opportunities to tailor instruction to meet the student's needs. Providing students with the knowledge of their learning style gives them valuable information for their lifetime. For example, if a child is an auditory learner it might be beneficial for her to sing a rap or a song to help learn her multiplication facts. If a student is a kinesthetic learner she could jump rope as she recites her 9s facts, and a visual learner could practice the same facts using flashcards. Having different ways to teach the same concept provides more opportunities to ensure more students will be successful. I strive to find the best way to help a student retain information.

I look forward to continuing to help students find success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
