I have two degrees in biology (with an emphasis in molecular and microbiology, and a minor in chemistry) and have taught science at the high school and college levels for the past six years. Prior to teaching high school, I taught middle school math and science for two years. Part of the time I was teaching middle school I worked as a private tutor for two homeschooling families and taught the humanities (including Latin!) as well as my trademark subjects.

Over my eight years of teaching, I have encountered students with all ranges of abilities -- advanced students who needed a bit of guidance to get a leg up for college, middle of the road students who had been placed in classes that were too difficult for them (or sometimes too easy for them), students with learning gaps that needed remedied (especially math and reading), and students with all kinds of learning differences (especially ADHD and autism spectrum). Each of these students has taught me how to be a better teacher, and how to pass along difficult concepts in ways that are understandable and enjoyable.

Teaching is the most difficult job I have ever had, and also the most rewarding. There is nothing that compares to that light bulb moment when a student finally masters a challenging concept! This makes tutoring especially rewarding -- there are frequently more light bulbs when you have a one on one environment that is tailored to the student's specific needs.

I pride myself on getting my tutoring students to be as independent as possible as quickly as possible -- you might say I like to work myself out of a job! Ultimately, all teaching and tutoring is about the student, which is why my focus is on working towards that independence. I give a lot of outside assignments -- especially when I am tutoring in the summer -- that students can work on as they choose to get a leg up on their studies at their own pace. I also spend a lot of time outside the actual tutoring hour preparing myself and the materials I will be using, in order to provide th

I took multiple classes in genetics as an undergrad and as a graduate student. The two labs I worked in as a graduate student were heavily based on the science of genetics. In one lab, I used a variety of biotechnology techniques to produce novel proteins in bacterial vectors, and in the other I was involved in a project on transcription factors in C. elegans.
