I have more than 30 years of experience teaching and tutoring from first grade to university levels. I have an undergraduate degree in history from Transylvania University in Lexington, KY and graduate degrees from University of Virginia (MEd) and University of Kentucky (MA, Theatre). I both teach and tutor at Bluegrass Community and Technical College (Lexington) and am a Playwright Mentor at the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning (Lexington). At BCTC I teach remedial English and reading courses. However, I tutor a wide range of students on how to research and write papers across the curriculum: from anthropology and art to dental hygiene, English, film, nursing and theatre. Areas of expertise include ENC 90 and 91, ENG 101 and 102, APA, MLA, and Chicago style manuals.
Outside of academia I am owner of a small publishing firm, JW Books (Cynthiana, KY) which publishes a literary journal, Snapdragon: A Journal of Creativity, the Kentucky Theatre Yearbook, and anthologies of plays by Kentucky playwrights. Most recently we have published The Kentucky New Play Series Anthology (Vol. 1 2012 and 2013). I am a member of the Dramatists Guild of America, president of the Kentucky Playwrights Workshop and a past member of the board of the Kentucky Theatre Association. My passion is writing and teaching writing in all its forms and I write most of them. I have had poems, flash fiction, and plays published. I have started writing groups in several communities and a primary reason for starting Snapdragon was to give group members the thrill of seeing something that they'd written published. All of this experience as a teacher, publisher and editor will be available to my students because at heart, before I am anything else, I am a teacher.
Whether you are wanting to learn to write a paragraph, a five paragraph paper or a 10 page research paper I can help you. And if you are searching for help in improving your reading comprehension, I can help. If you are seeking help in writing fiction, poetry or plays I have experience with those as well as how to present those professionally so as to improve your chances of publication or production. And having spent the better part of the last five years or so as an online tutor I have the skills to be helpful both in-person or online.
Since 1983 I have been conducting oral history interviews for the Nunn Center for Oral History at the University of Kentucky. Consequently, I am knowledgeable of historical research methods and interviewing techniques and styles. In more than 200 interviews I have spoken with actors, directors, lawyers, judges, politicians, producers, teachers and school administrators. I have the expertise to read and evaluate undergraduate and graduate level history papers across a wide range of topics and many fields.
Whether you want to write a high school paper or a graduate thesis I have the expertise to help make you a better writer and your paper significantly better. I can teach you how to revise and edit your papers--whether for literary journals or peer reviewed journals-- to a high gloss. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to tutor in this area because of my diverse background and experience. In a career that goes back 50 years I have been an actor, director, producer and Stage Manager. I hold an MA in theatre from the University of Kentucky. I have produced the Kentucky New Play Series-- which produces short new plays by Kentucky playwrights at the Kentucky State Fair each August-- since 2012. I am an associate. member the Dramatists Guild of America and president of the Kentucky Playwrights Workshop, Inc. Finally, I am the editor of the Kentucky Theatre Yearbook and of a recently published anthology of the plays produced during the first two years of KNPS. (Both the anthology and the KTY are available on Amazon.com.)
