About Lisa

I obtained a doctorate in Microbiology and Immunology in 1996 from the University of Louisville. My graduate work was characterizing the hemolytic activity in the Lyme disease organism. That was followed by several postdoc positions where I repeatedly reinvented myself. In addition to the prokaryotic knowledge from the doctorate, I learned about yeast and protein transport inside the eukaryotic cells. Then I went to the Cancer Center and learned about stem cells and tissue cell cultures. Next was the dental school where I investigated organisms in the mouth and learned how to use an anaerobic chamber. Along the way I also worked for industry for several years as a Scientific Curator where I helped to build protein databases until I was laid off when the company restructured. There I developed the skills of editing and proofreading that helped improve the databases and obtained supervisory experience while training a team in 'nametagging' to pull relevant literature from the scientific journals. I tired of reinventing myself and decided to teach all that I had learned, hoping to find more stable employment.

For the past five years I have been teaching Medical Microbiology at Jefferson Community & Technical College with both lecture and laboratory sections. While there I maintained an office with regular hours to be available for student questions. I believe in giving students all they need to succeed in the course. Tutoring allows for one-on-one help with whatever the student needs. I love to pass along knowledge that I have gained in my many years of education. I have both technical and training skills in the disciplines of Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Cell Biology. Also, in college I took physics and chemistry along with algebra. I also spent three semesters in medical school before switching to the graduate school , so anatomy, physiology, and genetics as well. I look forward to being able to help students succeed.

I was a student for a long time, so I know what it is like growing up. It takes a lot of hard work and effort to succeed in school. Many of my students say I do a good job teaching and making the class fun. My students report that I was recommended by their peers. I have often had to explain my history to the public and I hope to always be able to tailor it to my audience. I think tutoring should be tailored to whatever the student needs. Often they will benefit from having someone else explain the topic. No class should ever be incomprehensible for the student.

I do have a 12 hour cancellation policy so I like to arrange the best time for the student. If you don't notify me at least 2 hours before a scheduled lesson time, I will charge you for the one hour time anyway. I will have spent time preparing for the lesson. I try to be fairly quick in responding when I am contacted.

Please send me an email if you'd like me to help you master your studies!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Science

I have a doctorate in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Louisville. In school I took mostly science classes to prepare for medical school.
