Oberlin College, Oberlin (Biology)
I am working as the Planetarium Coordinator for Western Kentucky University. I am a 65-year old man who over the years has taught every subject at every grade level as an artist in the schools. I have specialized in teaching curriculum through the arts and have had to demonstrate knowledge of every subject at every grade level over time. I have been in the classrooms of public schools every day for about 60% of my adult life. I hold a Bachelor's Degree from Oberlin College with a major in Biology and minors in Chemistry and Math.
I have tutored a lot over the years, and whereas I am comfortable handling any subject, my particular strong point is Math. I am able to find the way that students can understand the principles being learned (and this way is different for each student).
I believe that each student can learn and that it is my responsibility to find the way that each student learns best. So much of it revolves around instilling the confidence in the student that he or she is intelligent and capable of mastering the subject. I have been very successful at this and have usually had very short tutoring assignments, because once we discover what is impeding a student from understanding the subject matter, fixing it becomes easy and then the student can usually proceed on their own with or without the help of a parent or other adult. The younger the student, the more I appreciate having the parent involved in understanding what I am doing, and the results we are achieving, so they can actively participate with their child, especially once I am no longer needed.
Having said that my specialty is Math, my major and minor in college was in the sciences, I am also an accomplished actor and director, have written eight books for teachers and over 45 plays, and have a passion for history and social sciences, so I can tutor all the sciences, arts and humanities, and am good at teaching English, and English as a Second language. I have worked with special education students of all kinds as well.
I worked for a number of years in the largest financial institutions in NYC as a freelance editor, computer text and graphics designer, and can explain Microsoft Word and PowerPoint proficiently.
I am an avid Chess and Bridge player in my spare time.
I look forward to meeting and working with new students and enjoy discovering the unique individuality and creativity of all my tutees. I look forward to working with you. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a moderately good amateur chess player who has been studying and playing for 40+ years. I am by no means at the master level, but I can teach you the basics and teach you winning strategy well enough so you can be much better than average, and compete favorably in most high school level tournaments. On the site chess dot com, I hold a current ranking of 1785 (average is 1200) which puts me better than 88.2% of the members.
If you want to get started, or want to improve your basic strategy so you are not just fumbling around in the dark. I'm your man.
I learned Word in the corporate market many years ago. My knowledge of current versions is less up to date. There are many new features with which I am unfamiliar. I still can get you started, however.
For years I have tutored teenage students in mathematics and I have invariably found that it comes down to the fact NOT that they are incapable but rather that they have missed a basic concept early on and with that foundation shaky, everything that proceeds after that is going to topple like a string of dominoes. Once we find the basic concept that needs solidifying, everything proceeds smoothly from there.
I have been acting since I was six, directing since I was ten, and continued to do so all through public school and college. When I finished my academic major requirements in college, I took a concentration in theatre in my senior year, including acting, directing, technical theatre production, and costuming. I studied voice at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music for four years. When I graduated, I joined the regional theatre at the Performing Arts Foundation on Long Island (NY) and worked in the resident company for five years.
I have performed in dozens of professional productions for adult audiences, and directed and music directed dozens as well. I have stage managed professionally, managed props, and designed and built sets and costumes. I have been in children's theatre for over 35 years now, with an emphasis on improvisational theatre. I have written or co-written over 45 plays for young people, directed and actor coached hundreds of acting students of all ages from early childhood to senior citizen. Over the years I have developed a number of powerful shortcuts to help students develop their abilities in acting. If a student is open and willing to work, I believe there is a way to improve their theatrical abilities significantly, in any area of theatre.
I have been a writer, editor and publisher for over 20 years. I have authored and edited 9 published books, 45 plays, and numerous articles and essays. I was a newspaper columnist for many years, writing weekly articles and columns for the local paper. I have also written and published a number of small business e-newsletters.
