Grinnell College (Mathematics)
Hello! My name is Ben S., and there is nothing I love more than helping people with math. I currently work with the Madison County school system as a math tutor. I am a graduate of Grinnell College with a double major in Mathematics and Russian, both with honors. While at Grinnell, I worked in the college's Math Lab tutoring students in calculus and linear algebra. I liked staying fresh on the material and giving quick and competent assistance, but my favorite part was watching each student improve throughout the semester. I have also worked with the Mathnasium after-school program, focusing on number sense and foundational math skills.
When tutoring, I try to make sure the student is comfortable with what they don't know. I encourage them to ask questions and I am receptive when they don't understand something. By turning the lesson into an interactive experience, the material becomes more approachable, and the student's knowledge becomes more robust and well-rounded.
If, over the course of multiple sessions, the student does not retain knowledge and skills which they initially understood, I may assign homework between sessions. While I believe that learning cannot happen through repetition alone, it is very important to make sure each concept sticks, because early methods must be used efficiently to understand more advanced concepts. Practice makes perfect!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have several years experience tutoring algebra 1 to students in middle and high school, college students, and adults.
I tutored calculus, both single- and multivariable, for three years at the college level, in addition to tutoring individual students in high school and college. I am extremely comfortable with the standard content and a variety of methods for explaining each topic.
I have several years experience tutoring elementary math topics to students in elementary and middle school. My lessons focus on building number sense and quantitative reasoning skills.
I have tutored linear algebra for two semesters, attending classes and running both one-on-one and group mentor sessions.
In my work, I teach prealgebra to children of many different ages.
