Bio

I graduated from the college with a 3.8 g.p.a and suma cume laude in English Education 5-12 and then went directly into teaching. I started by subbing for a year at a high school and loved it, but the job I was covering did not give an option to bid on permanently so I bid on a middle school English job in the area and got it. I taught at that school for ten years, teaching 6th, 7th, and 8th graders and loved it. Unfortunately, life had other plans for me and I had to leave that job. I now...

I now write in my spare time, work around the house, and enjoy just spending time with my family.

Some of my interests include reading (of course), family outings, watching biographies and historical documentaries (as well as comedies, science fiction, horror, and old silent films), biking, hiking, gaming (when time allows), and anything that will bring new experiences or broaden my interests. Another major interest in my life is music. My music collection includes classical, rock, rap, blues, bluegrass, funk, metal, speed metal, heavy metal, and many others. I have been to multiple concerts and my son plays lead guitar, standing bass, and writes his own music. Finally, I would say these interests have always helped me make bonds with many of my students in the past, and they have lead to reaching student in ways where other teachers had failed. I also try to incorporate these interests with my lessons until I can discover what the students enjoy and then these can be used in order to bring a connection of the material in a way that makes it more interesting and gives the student more desire to improve the ability to communicate that love or passion.

I have not applied these skills to just tutoring, but I have so in helping students on work in the class, as well as after class, and most seem to open up to the tactic. I love teaching for many reasons. I love seeing and hearing students have their "oh" moment when they finally get something or the knowledge finally clicks. I enjoy instilling a passion for language and communication into others, as well as helping to show students that nothing is out of the realm of understanding. I strive to incorporate what is being learned into real world applications so that my students can see that what is being learned does have reason behind it and could actually help them achieve their own goals and desires in multiple ways. In the end, I would have to say that that I am not a "set in my ways" instructor which helps me to see when something is not working or not reaching the student so that I can quickly retrace and try another tactic or adapt a plan in a way that seems more likely to help an individual or a group as a whole.

In conclusion, after reading some about me and my different passions, I hope you consider me when trying to choose a tutor. I believe together we will be able to figure out a strategy for you to find success or improvement in the area that you may be having difficulty in. Also, I am sure that if both of us put in the time and work, achievement would be just around the corner. I have had a passion for reading and writing since I can remember and I love seeing the same grow and develop in others, especially when difficulty, resentment, or boredom sat in its place before. So again, I hope to hear from you soon and remember that even The Great Wall of China started with just one block.

Grammar,

Grammar

Multiple Content Standards for teaching English to Middle School students in West Virginia is a focus on grammar skills. I believe I accomplished this to the best of my ability during my ten years teaching. Also, grammar plays a large part in the the Reading section of the Praxis I and II testing for teaching certification in which I scored 186 from a possible range of 100-200. Finally, I feel my score on the grammar testing I completed for this site also shows my skills and ability to tutor in this subject.
Proofreading

Proofreading

During my ten years teaching middle school I would end the year with a major research paper for all 120 of my students from all three grade levels. To prepare for this I would have group editing and proofreading sessions in which I would teach 3-5 paragraph structures, ways to recognize and correct sentence errors, proofreading symbols, and other proofreading skills. Finally, I would do peer editing sessions in which students would not only be graded on their own work, but also on how much effort and discovery occurred during their group sessions.

Reading,

Reading

During my years in school, I always scored exceptionally high in the reading field. Normally straight A's throughout my middle and high school years as well as college. When preparing to teach, I took Praxis tests for the ability to teach in Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia and scored a 187 out of a possible 190. Also, during my years teaching I often collaborated with the Reading teacher in order to create lessons that allowed writing activities on the reading subjects being taught at that time. In order to do this, I also had to teach certain reading skills for comprehension in order to accurately write about the theme or material being read at that time.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

While taking higher level college in English Lit and classroom skills, I was often required to trace the meaning and lexicons of multiple words in the English Language with normal dictionaries as well as the OED (Oxford English Dictionary). During my Praxis exams I scored a 177 out of a possible 190 in the writing section which had a focus on idiom and word choice. Also, I scored a 186 out of 200 in the English Language, Literature, and Composition section which contained sections on language and linguistics as well as composition and rhetoric. Finally, teaching writing for ten years brought me experience in teaching and guiding students through the steps of understanding and choosing the right word to convey the intended thought, knowledge, or emotion.
