I'm David. My career work was as an electrical designer and as an information systems programmer/analyst. My strategy for analyzing situations and solving problems has been to use what I know, research topics that I don't understand, design a solution and then improve that design or method. I have also been an avid learner using materials written by others (self-learning outside of a classroom). My tutoring strategy is to reinforce what is understood and build upon that to accomplish new goals. Learning is not possible when prerequisites aren't understood. A confident student learns to augment and build upon prerequisites. I strive to instill confidence in a student by demonstrating that a task can be accomplished using discoverable resources and techniques. When a problem seems insurmountable I teach how to break it down into manageable parts that can be solved using what the student already understands. As we progress the student learns to recognize how and when to apply the principles and techniques being learned.

I want to tutor you or your child to help met your goals, instill confidence and make learning fun. Ambition comes from gaining confidence that goals can be accomplished. I want to increase student expectations of success. I helped my wife improve her math grade from a D to an A when she was in college. I've been a GED tutor and enjoy seeing people gain understanding.

I'm very available and will respond to your inquiry quickly. Feel free contact me with questions you might have or to schedule a tutoring lesson for you or your child.

Computer Programming

I began programming in the early 1980s when I bought a Texas Instruments home computer. I learned Basic. Then I bought a Kaypro computer and learned dBase II (a desktop database software). That's what got me hooked on programming. Using Microsoft DOS and Windows (starting with v3), I learned Visual Basic for Applications, Visual Basic 3, 4, 5, 6, Microsoft ActiveX technologies, Microsoft Access, .net and C#, Java, SQL, JavaScript, HTML and CSS. I became a professional programmer/analyst supporting an information system. I also created websites on the side using ASP.net. I learned these technologies on my own because I loved learning them. I can help you learn to program.

I took Fortran in college (used IBM punch cards for input). I bought a TI-99/4A home computer in the early 80s and learned Basic on it. Then it was a Kaypro 10 CP/M machine (CP/M was a competitor to Microsoft DOS). I learned some assembly language and dBase II (a desktop database) language. I began using Microsoft Windows at version 3. I learned Visual Basic for applications, Visual Basic 3, 4, 5 and 6. Then it was .net, C#, Java, SQL, JavaScript, CSS and HTML.
