About Kate

I have been teaching a variety of levels since receiving my undergraduate degree in 2000. Since, I have continued my own education earning master's degrees in education and interdisciplinary studies in 2003 and 2011. I have taught 6th-10th grade English classes for 8 years. While teaching full time, I also taught college courses in English, communications, humanities, and study skills for 12 years. I was an instructional facilitator (coach for teachers) one year, and I helped start a college-like literacy center in my high school. Through the literacy center, I taught classes to 9th-12th grades in a variety of subjects, I tutored students one-on-one in writing, grammar, and ACT test prep, and I ran small and large group sessions to teachers and students alike. Additionally, I am a mother of five and understand the value of one-on-one support for children. I use my love of learning and passion for teaching to help my students unlock their own potential.

Whether it's learning the intricacies of English grammar or finding ways to connect to the material, I will help students set goals and work hard to improve. I also have "quick hits" to help students improve their ACT performance.

I work as much on intrinsic motivation, goal setting, and study skills as I do on the specific skills that my students are hoping they'll acquire.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I helped develop an ACT English review for high school students in order to better prepare them for the test. I have some "quick hits" that every student taking the ACT English should know prior to taking the test. My students who learned the "quick hits" reported greater confidence and improved scores.

Career Development

I taught a course called Success Strategies for nearly a decade at Westwood College. The Success Strategies class was a professional development class designed to help students develop techniques to improve their learning in and out of school. I covered a wide range of skills from note-taking and reading, to organization and time management. We also covered skills in critical thinking, collaborating, communicating, and interviewing. I also work diligently to teach my middle school students time management, organization, and the value of intrinsic motivation as it relates to their learning.

Common Core

I have taught both in Wyoming and in Kansas where the Common Core was accepted. I have an understanding for the Common Core standards. I also have a master's degree in Curriculum Design and Instruction and can effectively design a curriculum to help students reach the standards outlined in the Common Core.

English

I have been teaching English for 16 years from 7th grade-college. I have two master's degrees; one degree is in education and the other is in English, communications, and the humanities.

Grammar

I have been teaching English grammar for 16 years to students from 7th-12th grades, to college students, and to teachers. I have used a variety of programs and methods to help students learn grammar.

Soccer

I have played soccer for most of my life. I began playing competitive soccer when I was 11. I started for my high school varsity soccer team in Evergreen, Colorado, where I was a midfielder for all four years. I was also very fortunate in getting to play across Europe for two months when I was 17 for the Colorado Rush. I then started as a midfielder my freshman year at the University of Maine. Aside from the opportunities I had to play on the field, I also coached a couple recreational teams when I was in high school. I ran a two-day clinic for 5-8-year-olds, and joined my college team in providing soccer training for a weekend to youth players in Orono, Maine.

Vocabulary

I love to teach vocabulary in context and do so through a variety of strategies and games. I have done extensive research in vocabulary to create and implement a school-wide high school vocabulary program. I have also taught a course in vocabulary to high school teachers to help them make vocabulary more interactive and engaging for students.

Writing

I have written hundreds of essays myself in order to earn two master's degrees. I have graded thousands of essays for the last 16 years of my teaching career. More importantly, however, is my love for grammar, which has helped me teach writing as both an art and a necessary means to effective communication.
