About Heath

I have over 12 years experience working with individuals with learning disabilities and/or special needs. I have been a trainer, consultant, practitioner, and administrator in the Teaching Family Model which is a data-driven teaching methodology that emphasizes behavior specific praise and encouragement. I worked as a special education teacher in a Memphis high school where I co-taught english and math.

I received a Level 5 teacher rating- the highest available in the state of Tennessee- in my first year of teaching. I have two daughters, a four and a two year old; I teach them on a daily basis. I also have experience as a substitute teacher in which I worked with ages ranging from first grade to seniors in high school. I have also coached numerous employees on best teaching practices. I love to help others, and I feel a wonderful sense of accomplishment when I am able to help them learn something new. I especially love helping them gain confidence and feelings of self-worth.

I was given consistent feedback as a student on my writing ability. I have a firm grasp of grammar and actually have to restrain myself at times from correcting grammar of friends and family. :) I am extremely patient. I am an excellent motivator. I am good at connecting with students and teaching lessons in a way that they understand. The greatest motivator for future success is previous success. I help them celebrate small milestones in order to reach greater ones.

I love children. I have two of my own. I can connect with them on their level. Research has shown that the most important trait for a child to learn is tenacity. I choose my words wisely. It is important to help a child develop a growth mindset as opposed to a fixed mindset. A growth mindset says, "I can master this skill if I keep at it." A fixed mindset says, "Well, I'm just not good at......" I praise effort, attentiveness, and focus.

I had to work especially hard to learn the guitar, so therefore I can honestly tell a student, if I can do it, you can do it. I have a good grasp on basic music theory and technique. I have experience teaching beginner students. I am excellent at teaching beginning to intermediate students rhythm guitar including fingerpicking. I would not be a good choice for advanced students that want to learn lead guitar.

I have twelve years experience working with individuals with special needs. I met my wife because she and I worked with the same individual with special needs at different times, and the individual's family brought us both to Memphis where we met. We got married at the family's home, and the individual was in attendance. I see value in all humans. I learn from each student as I teach.

I can help you learn. I can help you develop the mindset that you will need in order to keep learning- whatever the subject. Parents, you will not find a more caring, devoted, and patient teacher for your child. Schedule a session and see for yourself.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Basketball

I began playing organized basketball when I was only seven years old. I played all the through high school and two years of junior college basketball. Along the way, I earned several individual awards including all-district in high school and co-MVP my team my senior year. I have experience coaching a youth league team (9 year olds) and an elementary girls team (grades 6-8). I can teach the fundamentals of both offense and defense. I have a good understanding of various zone defenses and man-to-man. I can teach kids how to shoot, dribble, pass, move their feet, come off picks, pick and roll, and more. I have been well-schooled on drills and techniques through the years.

Guitar

I have been playing guitar off-and-on for thirty years. I have made and sold recordings of my songs. I have played for numerous audiences and with a large number of talented musicians. I understand and can teach the Nashville number system which is the system studio musicians use to play songs in any key. I have taught guitar lessons before and am very good at teaching rhythm/fingerstyle guitar to beginning to intermediate students. I also have a decent grasp on music theory and can teach students to read music if they desire to do so. However, mostly I teach students how to play by ear and to follow chord or number charts.

Reading

I have a Master' Degree in Special Education. I worked for twelve years with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. A large part of what I did was to help students improve their reading skills.

Special Needs

I have a Master's Degree in Special Education. When completing my program, I taught at Madonna Learning Center- a school specifically for children with intellectual disabilities. I also was a certified special education teacher and taught in a traditional high school where I co-taught six classes per day and wrote Individualized Education Plans (IEP's). In addition to this, I have an eight years experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a residential setting. Not only did I teach the individuals with disabilities, but I also trained and consulted staff on how to most effectively teach and support our clients.

Voice (Music)

I went to college on a basketball and music scholarship. There I had one-on-one voice lessons once a week for four semesters. I also sang in the college choir and our college show choir. I have performed in musical theatre. I can teach students how to support their voices with proper breathing from the diaphragm. I also play the guitar, so I can play scales and have them sing along or I can accompany them as they learn their favorite songs. I have sold recordings of me singing and playing the guitar. I have led worship groups at church.
