About Nichole

I am a music student at Wichita State University who has been passionate about music my whole life. I began playing instruments and singing before I can even remember, and I have been composing classical music since I was 13. I have helped many friends learn instruments and music theory, and I was even a teaching assistant for my high school orchestra teacher. I love working with students who are passionate about music because I get to be a part of someone else's creative process and see the world open up to them as they become more enlightened in music, and that is a priceless experience.

My primary focus as a musician is composition. I have composed a few works that have received praise from both my fellow students and my professors, and I am finishing up a String Quartet that will likely be played on a recital at Wichita State University in the near future. I learn music theory very quickly, so I know more music theory than any of my colleagues, and my theory professors all agree that I should continue to get a doctorate in composition and theory and be a professor myself. My primary performance medium is viola, which I feel I can play very expressively. My viola professor would like me to go to Julliard when I graduate. I can also play violin well, piano decently, and I have a good knowledge of how every other orchestral instrument works. I have helped many fellow students understand music theory and performance issues throughout my high school and college careers.

I would love to meet with anyone interested in any aspect of music and offer my expertise to advance your learning. I have a lot of availability, and I look forward to hearing from the future of music.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I took the ACT twice, once with writing and one without. Both times I scored a 36 on the Math section.

Chess

I am an avid chess player with an Elo rating of 1837 in correspondence chess on the world's #1 chess site. This puts me in the top 2% of chess players on the website. I know a lot of chess theory and strategy as I have read many of the greatest books about chess at least once.

Composition (Music)

I am a composition major who has been studying with Dr. Walter Mays at Wichita State University for two years. I have finished multiple pieces and performed many of them in a recital with overwhelmingly great feedback. I am frequently asked to help my fellow students with topics by both my instructors ad the students themselves.

Ear Training

I am a composer/performer who has an incredibly good ear. I've received an A in all of my Aural Skills classes in college so far, and I have even done independent studies in structural hearing. I practice my skills everyday, and I am the girl people turn to when they need help with ear training.

General Music

I have always been very passionate about music, and I am currently studying it at the collegiate level. I have taken many honors courses in music, and have worked on many advanced independent projects with my professors. I am frequently asked to help my fellow students with all sorts of questions by both my instructors and my colleagues themselves, and I have always been able to find the best ways of explaining things to people.

Piano

I have played piano casually for about ten years, and have taken lessons for the past two years. I have a very good understanding of the basic techniques required to play piano, and I play often in our piano masterclasses. I have often been asked questions of interpretation by other piano students, and have worked with some of my family members on basic techniques with great success.

Violin

I have been playing viola for almost 8 years, and I am also a pretty good violinist. I have played in many chamber groups, was the principal violist in high school, and have some professional playing experience. I have taught lessons to others at my high school with great success, and regularly contribute very important discussion to our viola masterclasses, some of which was missed by my professor. On top of that, I have the most responsibility in managing our university orchestra viola section and in discussing what we need to work on in sectionals even though I am not our principal violist.
