Greenville College (Literature and TESOL)
In college I earned a TESOL certificate and taught conversational English to Chinese freshmen in an intensive language program. I created lesson plans, gathered outside materials and resources, and supervised the volunteer tutors who assisted me in the class. I also had a part-time job as an English writing tutor, helping all freshmen with their compositions for basic ENG 101 courses.
In 2012 I was a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant, although the title is misleading. I was not an assistant; I was the primary instructor of English grammar for three university classes in the foreign language department at Mugla University in Turkey. My students were mainly in the engineering program, and I had to collaborate with three teams of colleagues to prepare these students for an intermediate level exam at the end of the year, which would determine if they were ready to begin their English-taught engineering courses the following fall.
I studied violin from age 10 through 17, using Suzuki Method. I performed extensively during these years, competing in regional and state music festivals and actively participating in various youth and adult symphonies in my area, some of which required an audition. In college I performed in the Kansas State University Symphony and the Greenville College Chamber Orchestra. I also had experience improvising with select bands at Greenville College. Currently I am a member of the Nittany Valley Symphony, having performed such pieces with them as Beethoven's 9th, Strauss' A Hero's Life, and Elgar's Enigmas.
My hobbies include reading, creative writing (I was a member of my college writing club and, in Spring 2012 I took a tutorial session in Creative Writing during a study abroad at Oxford University), knitting, and swimming. I was certified as a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor, and though my license is expired, I had over five years of experience teaching swimming lessons to children from ages 3 through 10. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
