About Lisa

Hello!

I have been a teacher for over fifteen years, and I have worked with students aged pre-school through adult. I have tutored students in a variety of subjects, though I am only certified in English and social studies. (Believe it or not, math was my favorite subject in school!) So, don't be afraid to inquire about other subjects!

I have tutored students in reading through the Topeka Literacy council, and I have worked as a volunteer teacher at Washburn University with college aged students who wanted to gain a better grasp of English.

I look forward to working with you!

Sincerely,

Lisa

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Film

I completed an art of film class as part of my master's degree program. I also took two other classes that incorporated elements of film criticism. I also work as a photographer part-time, and symbolism within films is very similar to the symbolism present in still photography. In addition, elements of fiction/non-fiction in film are very similar to those within literature (which I am certified to teach).

Photography

I have taken several photography classes at the college level. In addition, I work as a professional portrait photographer. I continuously attend photography workshops. I have a good grasp of Adobe Photoshop.

Public Speaking

I taught public speaking for two years as a high school teacher. I understand how you must teach concepts a bit differently when teaching public speaking as opposed to simply teaching writing. I recognize other components that impact delivery of speeches (such as non-verbal elements).

Social Studies

I am certified to teach social studies to students in grades 5-9. I also have a master of liberal arts degree with a concentration in social sciences/sociology.
