Knox College (Creative Writing)
My name is Jakeb. I am soon to receive a BFA in Creative Writing from Knox College, a program consistently ranked on the national scale -- and a program which frequently prepares its graduates to attend the prestigious MFA workshop at the University of Iowa (generally accepted as the top writing program in the country). My writing has been published in the Cellar Door literary magazine, the McNair Journal of Interdisciplinary Research, in addition to a few online venues. I currently work part-time as a copyeditor for private clients who wish to publish their novels and part time as a tutor here, through Wyzant. I have experience in other subjects, but language arts is the subject which I feel most comfortable tutoring.
I am the person to call if you are struggling to write essays for class and/or application essays for college--or if you have any other difficulties with the language arts. My first goal with the tutoring process is to develop a passion for language within the student. I teach in the tradition of Paulo Freire and Viola Spolin -- students are not containers to be filled with information, but rather human beings who have creative powers of language which can be both encouraged and released. Hence, I incorporate language games, improvisation, and humor into my lessons, especially during the brainstorming and prewriting processes.
For specific essays, I help the student through the entirety of the writing process. First a guided brainstorming/prewriting session, then outlining, followed by the bulk of the writing process. After that I review the student's essay, provide commentary and some line editing. Together, the student and I produce a polished, coherent essay guaranteed to impress English teachers and college admissions officers alike.
I also offer services in general reading/writing skills: vocabulary acquisition, word choice, sentence structure, grammar skills, and other topics of that sort. If the student is having trouble earning A's or even B's in English class, I can help them boost that grade to acceptable levels. Hello!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
