I am a former Secondary English teacher with ten years of experience at college prep high schools. While teaching I specialized in developing writing skills and literature. Later, I taught several years as a tutor for foreign students attending medical school.
My teaching/tutoring style was to help students one on one after school. After discussing their papers and together making suggestions, the students could resubmit their revised versions. If the new version improved their paper, I would raise their grade accordingly. I was happy to raise their grades and their writing style improved.

I am proficient in my area of expertise and have an easygoing personality. In teaching, I try to be creative in my presentation and stay attuned to a student’s needs and ability. Part of my attraction to teaching is that I enjoy young adults.
I enjoy reading all types of literature. Though a somewhat slow reader, I try to read one or two novels a week. Also, I have written and published poetry.
In college, I received an English undergraduate degree and then completed a Masters degree in English.

After my teaching career, I worked with computers in business world; consequently, I have a strong background using PC's. Now, I am retired from my IT career.
At this point in my life, I would enjoy working with students again.

Grammar

Grammar

I taught at freshman and sophomore at college prep schools for ten years. While teaching, I emphasized grammar because it was the building block for writing better sentences. Consequently, their papers improved as they were able to build better sentences that expressed their ideas in a more sophisticated means. I have worked with students with various backgrounds and experience.

Reading,

Reading

I want to provide a solid foundation for students by introducing them to reading skills that will be beneficial in all their classes. Comprehension of reading matter is important; but also, I want to instill in the student an appreciation of reading. When in the classroom, I had students bring books or magazines of their choice. Never had 60 minutes been spent where the students gave their full attention. The idea is to introduce the student to the enjoyment of reading. I believe in giving them the basics of language learning which includes comprehension, grammar and analysis skills to interpret and appreciate the written word. I offer my knowledge, skills, and experience to your children to help them with their reading needs.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I teach vocabulary not just as a list of words to memorize, but as a tool to improve their ability to express themselves. A better vocabulary improves students' ability to communicate through speaking and writing. Particularly in writing, in which a stronger vocabulary gives the students the ability to use a variety of words to express their ideas. In reading, a good vocabulary allows student to comprehend not just meaning, but inferences that are made within passages. As well as vocabulary gives the student the ability to deduce the meaning of a given word.

ACT English

I taught freshman and sophomore English at Rockhurst High School for five years. Previously, I taught Junior and Senior English elsewhere. The majority of my students took ACT and /or SAT tests and attended college. My high school teaching included grammar, writing and literature—poetry, fiction, American, and English literature.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

The two types of ACT Reading questions are referring questions and reasoning questions. Referring questions which ask information that is directly stated in the passage is the easier. But they are not always straight forward. I will help students better understand this type of question and its pitfalls. The other type of question is the reasoning question which asks a student to draw conclusions from information that is implied in the passage. In other words, reasoning questions involve reading between the lines. I will help students to better understand what passage implies.

Writing

I taught freshman and sophomore English at college prep schools for over ten years. During that time, I emphasized writing skills because it was so essential for students to capture their ideas and opinions on paper. Outlines were created to organize a strong cohesive paper. In addition, we studied different writing styles including sentence structure so that ideas were clearly expressed. My teaching/tutoring style was to help students one on one after school. After discussing their papers and together making suggestions, the students could resubmit their revised versions. If the new version improved their paper, I would raise their grade accordingly.
