Tutoring is ONLINE using the video chat and interactive white board capabilities within the Wyzant system. If you think ONLINE tutoring can't help you, I tutored a high school senior who lived several states away from my home for nine lessons. As a result of these lesson, she increased her confidence in math to successfully pass the ASVAB military entrance test and was selected to join the United States Navy. With ONLINE tutoring both the student and I will be able to see each other. Each of us will have the capability to upload problems onto multiple whiteboard pages. The completed whiteboards can be saved by the student during the lesson.

My passion for seeing students and adults improve their math and science skills is the reason why I love being a tutor. My preparation includes reviewing homework assignments and preparing special materials unique to the specific student. My goal is to always provide value and quality in each tutoring session. I have tutored over fifty individual students in elementary school, middle school, high school, and college. I have also tutored adults who are returning to school and needing to refresh or learn new math skills for advancing their education or career.

Elementary Math

My role as a tutor for elementary math will depend on the specific needs of the student. For the younger student, it may be help with understanding what multiplication is. For the 4th or 5th grader, it may involve understanding percents and fractions. For the student getting ready for middle school, it could be help with understanding the beginning concepts of Algebra. As a tutor, I will utilize the library, the Internet, and information obtained from the students teacher to conduct tutoring session that are tailored to the specific needs of the student.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Learning and applying Algebra requires sound math fundamentals (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). If the fundamentals are weak, I will suggest a course of remedial study to improve the fundamentals. My tutoring of Algebra can provide teaching for a wide range of specific topics such as a)plotting points on a graph for a linear equation, b) the powers of numbers (squared, cubed, etc.,c)working with exponents and polynomials, and d) solving simultaneous equations. I use my personal collection of text books and excellent resources from the local library and junior colleges to supplement the student's text books and to keep current with what the student is learning in their high school or college class. I was contacted to provide tutoring for a bright home schooled boy, age14. The purpose of the tutoring was to review algebra topics so he would do well on a junior college, math placement test. For this tutoring I used the study guides available on-line at a local junior college. I met with the boy for three sessions, 2 hours each. We went over 60 algebra problems from the study guides. The comment from his mother, “Andy's score was high enough to get him into the math classes just below College Algebra which is where I wanted to start him. So we appreciate all your efforts on his part.” My background includes courses in Algebra during high school and college and the practical application of these concepts during an engineering career.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

As a tutor my focus is to provide tutoring for all levels of algebra courses from pre-algebra to pre-calculus and college algebra. I have tutored students in all levels of math from a 2nd grade student wanting to learn to multiply to high school and college students taking honors level classes. An example is a student who had a D average in Algebra 2. We met several times each week to review her home work assignments. With my encouragement to have an "I CAN" attitude toward math, she finished the semester with an A. My background includes an engineering career in aerospace, robotics, and machine vision applications. I have been a mentor to individual youth at schools in our school district. I have helped parents coach robotics teams. Tutoring is ONLINE using the video chat and interactive whiteboards in the Wyzant system. If you think ONLINE tutoring can't help you, I tutored a high school senior who lived several states away from me. Geometry involves a series of rules known as Postulates (P's) and Theorems (T's). These P's and T's build on each other as the course. To be successful, the student must learn each new P or T as the course evolves. Failure to do this learning will result in the course becoming very difficult to the student. I have been tutoring students in Geometry, Algebra, and PreCalculus for ten years. I also tutor for the math portion of the GED, ACT, and ASVAB (military entrance) tests. I have helped over 35 students improve their grades and achieve higher results on college and military entrance tests. I am a retired engineer having worked with projects for aerospace, application of robots in manufacturing plants, and the design of custom optical systems for night vision surveillance.

An example is students taking a PreCalculus class at a local high school. They needed help to understand the course material beyond what was being presented by the teacher in class. Rylie was a student wanting to finish the course with a A to qualify for college scholarships. We met several times each week to discuss the course material and review specific problems she sent to me before each tutoring session. With my help to complete these problems, Rylie received the grade which allowed her to be at the top of her high school class. she received scholarships for college where she planned to study radiology. In my tutoring, I continue with lessons to help the students keep pace with their current course material. As they prepare for tests and finals, I help them better understand how to solve certain problems. If the student's basic math skills are weak, specific instruction is provided to improve these skills. My background includes an engineering career in aerospace, robotics, and machine vision applications. I have been a mentor to individual youth at schools in our school district. SAT Math

I have tutored students in all levels of math from a 2nd grade student wanting to learn to multiply to high school and college students taking honors level classes. For the math section of the SAT test, I use a specific study guide. This study guide covers problems in algebra, geometry, statistics, and trigonometry. I provide additional materials to help the student understand the more advanced math questions. To help the student receive the best benefit from my tutoring and the person paying for the tutoring to receive a cost effective solution, I recommend the student prepare for the SAT by using the specific study guide that I will recommend.. Then the student can bring to each tutoring session, specific examples of topics where they need the most help. My tutoring and mentoring experience includes mentoring an elementary school student for six years; tutoring two brothers in algebra and ACT test preparation for 7 years, tutoring a female high school student in Algebra 2 and College Algebra for two years; helping a high school senior improve her ASVAB test knowledge resulting in her qualifying to join the Navy, helping a nursing director use Microsoft Excel to complete problems for a graduate level course involving statistics.

I specialize in tutoring for the math and science section of the GED. In Missouri, the test is now called HISET (High School Equivalency Test). The basis of my tutoring for either test is published study guides available from the library or book store. The level of tutoring is based on what grade level the student has completed. As the tutoring continues, I carefully watch for any weakness in the students primary math skills and incorporate additional instruction to help the student improve these skills. I encourage students to have their own study guide (I provide recommendations) and bring specific questions to tutoring sessions. This helps to minimize the cost and time commitment for tutoring.

Rodney Raised my ASVAB Score!!!

I would highly recommend Rodney's services to anyone who is need of assistance with Mathematics, algebra, or any other numeric tutoring. He helped me raise my ASVAB score in Arithmetic and Math Knowledge by over 15 points. This was done in a constrained time period of two weeks. If we had more time I can only imagine how Rodney would have been able to assist me. Not only was Rodney able to answer my questions but provided me with problems to practice what I was struggling with. I would highly recommend him for anyone needing help with standardized math assessments.

Emergency tutoring

I am so sorry to keep you in suspense for so long. My son got a 75% on his college algebra final. With only two sessions!! You obviously could tell where he was fuzzy and clarified it for him. So yes it was immensely helpful because there was a fear he wouldn't pass. You're going the extra mile for us and it really paid off. Covering the specific types of problems by reviewing his review sheet was genius! Thanks for preparing so thoroughly for the sessions with him. I think that was key in helping him over the hump. He said these things about you; "It was a very challenging test and I was worried I wouldn't pass. He was helpful, knowledgeable, easy to talk to, moved at your pace, good at explaining, encouraging, (he said I was smart). The problems that I missed were the ones that I didn't get to work through multiple times for lack of time." I so appreciate your flexible attitude in being accommodating to our very short notice of a request. You were a life saver for his grade and I'm sure the outcome would have been very dismal without your skillful tutoring. We couldn't have been more pleased with how you imparted your math expertise to our son in a way that he could grasp. I would highly recommend your services to anyone needing the kind of assistance you provided. Our son was receptive to your instruction and it was just the kind of one on one help that filled in the gap for missing understanding. Thank you, Rodney, for your A+ tutoring! I hope this will help you get more tutoring assignments and more kids! Thanks for a wonderful experience.
