Tutoring is online using the video chat and interactive white board capabilities within the Wyzant system. This link is an introduction to these features, https://www.wyzant.com/online/student. The student and I will be able to see each other. Both of us will have the capability to upload documents onto multiple whiteboard pages. Math equations can be created and modified using a built in editor tool. Whiteboards can be saved by the student at the end of the lesson. These tools in the Wyzant system can provide an excellent experience for the serious student. For a new student who may be hesitant to try online tutoring, I give the first 30 minutes of a lesson, free. This helps us to determine if online tutoring is a good fit for the student The 30 minutes of free lesson time applies only to the first lesson.

Tutoring for test preparation includes: ACT, SAT, GED, HISET (new replacement for the GED), Accuplacer (math college entrance), Catholic high school placement, and ASVAB (armed services vocational aptitude). I use practice tests from study guides to help the student learn the types of questions for the particular test.

My passion for seeing students and adults improve their math and science skills is the reason why I love being a tutor. My preparation includes reviewing homework assigned by student's teacher or preparing special materials unique to the specific student. This preparation is at no additional charge. My goal is to always provide value and quality in each tutoring session.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Learning and applying Algebra requires sound math fundamentals (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). If the fundamentals are weak, I will suggest a course of remedial study to improve the fundamentals. My tutoring of Algebra can provide teaching for a wide range of specific topics such as a)plotting points on a graph for a linear equation, b) the powers of numbers (squared, cubed, etc.,c)working with exponents and polynomials, and d) solving simultaneous equations. I use my personal collection of text books and excellent resources from the local library and junior colleges to supplement the student's text books and to keep current with what the student is learning in their high school or college class. I was contacted to provide tutoring for a bright home schooled boy, age14. The purpose of the tutoring was to review algebra topics so he would do well on a junior college, math placement test. For this tutoring I used the study guides available on-line at a local junior college. I met with the boy for three sessions, 2 hours each. We went over 60 algebra problems from the study guides. The comment from his mother, “Andy's score was high enough to get him into the math classes just below College Algebra which is where I wanted to start him. So we appreciate all your efforts on his part.” My background includes courses in Algebra during high school and college and the practical application of these concepts during an engineering career.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Tutoring services for Algebra 2 and College Algebra will include instruction on specific topics or a continual set of lessons designed to keep pace with the student's class. Common topics in these courses include factoring polynomials, quadratic equations, logarithms, and solving word problems with two unknowns. Geometry,

Geometry

Geometry involves a series of rules known as Postulates (P's) and Theorems (T's). These P's and T's build on each other as the course. To be successful, the student must learn each new P or T as the course evolves. Failure to do this learning will result in the course becoming very difficult to the student. I have been tutoring students in Geometry, Algebra, and PreCalculus for ten years. I also tutor for the math portion of the GED, ACT, and ASVAB (military entrance) tests. I have helped over 35 students improve their grades and achieve higher results on college and military entrance tests. I am a retired engineer having worked with projects for aerospace, application of robots in manufacturing plants, and the design of custom optical systems for night vision surveillance.
Physics,

Physics

My education is a Bachelor of Science degree with courses in math, physics, and certification to be a teacher. My career experience is as a design and production engineer of optical systems for space exploration and night vision surveillance. I have been mentoring or tutoring youth and adults since my retirement in 2008. The mentoring has been as part of an in-school program and as a coach for students building robots for competition. I have tutored students in all levels of math from elementary school to college level algebra. I have also tutored high school students in physics. A physics course typically involves separate units of study such as force and motion, heat, sound, light, and electricity. Each of these has one or more equations that can be used to solve a particular problem. The key to solving the problems is to clearly understand the given facts and which formula can be used to solve for the unknown. Typically, some amount of simple Algebra is required to move items to opposite sides of the equation to finish the solution. As a tutor, I utilize my collection of text books and library resources to supplement the physics material being taught in the student's class. I also provide additional instruction to help the student improve any weaknesses in their math problem solving skills.

SAT Math

As a tutor for SAT Math, I use software and Internet resources to generate test problems to evaluate the students skills in the various areas of math covered by the SAT test. I have been tutoring elementary school, high school, and college level math for 10 years. The focus of my tutoring is to help the student improve their fundamental math skills. I have a four year math degree and 44 years of career experience applying math and science to engineering projects. My college courses included classes towards gaining certification as a high school teacher.

Math

ACT Math,

ACT Math

My qualifications include a college degree in math and science plus courses towards a teaching certificate; a 44 year professional career applying math, and science to engineering projects; and 8 years of mentoring and tutoring youth and adults to help them accomplish their personnel goals. For tutoring for the math portion of the ACT, I use a complete study guide with 3 full length practice tests.. I supplement the study guide with my personal materials to help the student understand the more advanced questions of the tests such as those dealing with trigonometry and precalculus. To help the student receive the best benefit from my tutoring and the person paying for the tutoring to receive a cost effective solution, I recommend the student prepare for the ACT by using a study guide.. Then the student can bring to each tutoring session, specific examples of ACT topics where they need the most help. My tutoring and mentoring experience includes mentoring an elementary school student for five years; tutoring two middle school brothers in algebra (five years and continuing); tutoring a female high school student in Algebra 2 and College Algebra for two years; helping a high school senior improve his math skills to be able to pass the ASVAB and qualify to join the Army; helping a nursing director use Microsoft Excel to complete problems for a graduate level course involving statistics.

For this tutoring I used the study guides available on-line at a local junior college. I met with the boy for three sessions, 2 hours each. We went over 60 algebra problems from the study guides. The comment from his mother, “His score was high enough to get him into the math classes just below College Algebra which is where I wanted to start him. So we appreciate all your efforts on his part.”

Algebra 1,

As a retired business professional, my activities have been focused on mentoring and encouraging youth. An example is my involvement with an in-school mentoring program, My Volunteer Pal. I have been meeting with an elementary student, a boy, for the last four years, and have mentored him in math, social studies, and reading. He is now in 6th grade. I have also served as a mentor to a team of four third grade boys involved in the FIRST Lego League robotics program.
GED,

GED

I specialize in tutoring for the math and science section of the GED. In Missouri, the test is now called HISET (High School Equivalency Test). The basis of my tutoring for either test is published study guides available from the library or book store. The level of tutoring is based on what grade level the student has completed. As the tutoring continues, I carefully watch for any weakness in the students primary math skills and incorporate additional instruction to help the student improve these skills. I encourage students to have their own study guide (I provide recommendations) and bring specific questions to tutoring sessions. This helps to minimize the cost and time commitment for tutoring.
Geometry,

SAT Math

ACT Math,

Rodney Raised my ASVAB Score!!!

I would highly recommend Rodney's services to anyone who is need of assistance with Mathematics, algebra, or any other numeric tutoring. He helped me raise my ASVAB score in Arithmetic and Math Knowledge by over 15 points. This was done in a constrained time period of two weeks. If we had more time I can only imagine how Rodney would have been able to assist me. Not only was Rodney able to answer my questions but provided me with problems to practice what I was struggling with. I would highly recommend him for anyone needing help with standardized math assessments.

Emergency tutoring

I am so sorry to keep you in suspense for so long. My son got a 75% on his college algebra final. With only two sessions!! You obviously could tell where he was fuzzy and clarified it for him. So yes it was immensely helpful because there was a fear he wouldn't pass. You're going the extra mile for us and it really paid off. Covering the specific types of problems by reviewing his review sheet was genius! Thanks for preparing so thoroughly for the sessions with him. I think that was key in helping him over the hump. He said these things about you; "It was a very challenging test and I was worried I wouldn't pass. He was helpful, knowledgeable, easy to talk to, moved at your pace, good at explaining, encouraging, (he said I was smart). The problems that I missed were the ones that I didn't get to work through multiple times for lack of time." I so appreciate your flexible attitude in being accommodating to our very short notice of a request. You were a life saver for his grade and I'm sure the outcome would have been very dismal without your skillful tutoring. We couldn't have been more pleased with how you imparted your math expertise to our son in a way that he could grasp. I would highly recommend your services to anyone needing the kind of assistance you provided. Our son was receptive to your instruction and it was just the kind of one on one help that filled in the gap for missing understanding. Thank you, Rodney, for your A+ tutoring! I hope this will help you get more tutoring assignments and more kids! Thanks for a wonderful experience.

Well prepared and very helpful!

I highly recommend Rodney H. He was very helpful to my son who had gotten behind in Algebra due to an illness. We needed him quickly and he was available almost immediately. He not only was very prepared, but also showed us several helpful websites to help with homework, including my son's textbook website and a site with a free on-line graphing calculator.
