Kansas University (Master's)
Hello everyone. My name is Benjamin, and I'm here to help your student in the studies of literature, language arts, reading, and writing.
I am a highly qualified and competent instructor proficient in lesson planning, classroom management, content and curriculum development, assessment preparation and implementation. I had the good fortune of student teaching in the largest urban high school in the state of Kansas. This afforded me the opportunity to work with students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds with varying levels of ability. I kept track of attendance, grading, make-up work and lesson planning in my effort to effectively teach the two English classes I taught from nearly day one of my placement. Once my state required assessments were completed, I took the initiative to observe other classrooms outside of my own, taking in various teachers’ management strategies and uses of Kagen exercises and technology to enhance learning.
Prior to student teaching, I participated in the cooperative education program through Wichita State University, working predominantly as a student paraeducator in second and third tier algebra and geometry classes. I co-taught with various instructors providing tutorial support and additional instruction within classes, helping to prepare students for the Kansas Math Assessments.
When it comes to my content knowledge, I am highly proficient. Along with my Bachelors Degree in Secondary Education from Wichita State, I hold Bachelors Degrees in Journalism and English from Kansas University and a Masters of Fine Arts in Playwriting. While seeking my Masters, I aided in the workshop development of original undergraduate student plays in workshops and productions.
I am an active painter and graphic artist, a community theater volunteer, and amateur historian. I enjoy blogging about art, music, history, culture, publishing, creative writing, and teaching.
I believe education is a life-long endeavor to make sense of the world surrounding us and the role we play in society. Through physical, emotional, social, and intellectual experiences, the students learn about established practices, canonical thinking, and the status quo with the aid of an authoritative guide who challenges them to question every precept.
This guide, it is important to state, is aware of his own status as a learner teaching a fellow learner and is hesitant—in fact reticent—of brandishing absolute authority and wisdom. A guide is unbiased, ethical, open-minded, and always willing to help a student along the never-ending journey toward understanding. A want to improve drives all learning. A teacher strives to gain as well as give, walking beside the student in conversation and doing his best to allow progressive thought to take hold and lead the experiment toward a series of epiphanies that define the student’s individuality. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My MFA in playwriting from the University of Kansas required I work on several, concert readings, staged readings, and full productions of plays in varying capacities from lights and sound, to stage management, to stage performer, to set design and construction.
