About Linda

I am a certified teacher that has worked in the general education classroom as well as the special education classroom. I have taught six years of special eduction grades kindergarten through eighth grade and two years as a 5th and 6th grade teacher. I have also worked as a substitute teacher with children ranging from the preschool to high school level. I have had experience working for the Boys and Girls Club in the after school program as well as in the summer program, and during the 2013-14 school year, I worked in the after school program in the school where I worked.
I have never done any one-on-one tutoring before outside of the the school setting but feel that with my love of teaching and learning (yes, learning because we learn new things all the time) I would be a great help for your child(ren). My experience in teaching various subjects and my opportunities to function in a variety of educational settings will make it easier to adapt to new situations and concepts.
If you are interested in a dedicated teaching professional with the required credentials, patience, and positive attitude be have me help you child or children.

I feel that math has been a subject I excel at. If I don't understand something, I will research it until I have a better understanding of it.

I have been teaching the common core concepts for the last several years.

My teaching experience has been in the area of elementary education as well as middle school.

I hope that you will select me to be your tutor. I am willing to help you find new ways to help understand the concepts that you may be having trouble with.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a certified special education teacher and have worked with students with special needs for at least 9-10 years. Some of these students had been identified with ADD/ADHD. I have found that you need to sometimes make the subject relevant to the child. Children with ADD/ADHD may need more brain breaks then other children. Also it may be necessary to find other ways to have the child learn the concept being taught.

Common Core

I am a certified teacher in general education and special education for grades K-9. I have used the Common Core concepts in my lesson plans. I have also been a para-educator and have worked with students in the resource room or in the general education classroom on common core concepts.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught in the general education classroom as well as the special education classroom. Most of my teaching experience has been in the special education classrooms with students from grades kindergarten to eighth grade. Working with special education students I sometimes had to develop specific lesson plans for each student and had to find new ways of helping the students understand the concept being taught.

Handwriting

I am a certified teacher. I have worked with students on handwriting in both the general education classroom as well as the special education classroom. Another location that I have worked with students on handwriting is in after school programs that I have worked in for 3 years. One method I have used for the very young students is to use a highlighter pen and draw the letters, then have the student trace over the letters and also have them try to write 1 or 2 on their own. With older children i have had them write a paper, then have peer-editing and at times I would sit down with them an we would go over the paper before they hand it in to be grades.

Phonics

Having worked with younger children, I have worked with phonics. One year my job title was Title 1 para-educator. My job for this was to work with 1st grade students 1-1 or in small group on phonemic awareness. I had training in the program Pathways to Reading K-2 during this time which is the program that was used in the school district I worked in. I was responsible for creating lesson plans, testing and recording results of students. I have also worked with phonics with children in the special education classrooms I have taught in.

Social Studies

Being a certified teacher I have taught Social Studies in the general education classroom. I have had to sometimes work 1-1 with students in Social Studies in the resource room. I can and have made lesson plans for this subject. Learning about our history and all the aspects of social studies I find very exciting and hope that this excitement is conveyed to the students.

Special Needs

I have my certification in special education for grades K-9 and have worked with students with special needs for at least 9 years or more. During this time I have worked with student who have had ADD/ADHD, learning disabilities and some with behavioral difficulties. I have worked with two students who displayed selective mutism. As a substitute teacher I have on occasion worked with students who have had more severe disabilities.

Study Skills

Study skills are something I have taught in the classroom. I have also taught this in after school programs. Having home schooled my own children I also taught them to use study skills.
