My name is Jen. I have been tutoring and/or teaching math and science since 2006. I studied math and chemistry in college and focused on chemistry in graduate school. After graduate school, I taught chemistry for three years at a state university, primarily general chemistry and analytical chemistry courses. While I love teaching in smaller groups, I learned that teaching larger classes was not for me. I've since moved to a research based position, however, I hope to be able to still enjoy teaching through tutoring. I love working with just a few students, I can really figure out what is keeping them from understanding the topics and help them overcome those barriers. I have many ways to explain a lot of chemistry and math topics since I've been tutoring for 13 years. I look forward to helping you achieve your goals in your math and chemistry courses.

I have always loved math, so much so, that I pursued a bachelor's degree in it. I recognize that it's not for everyone, but I have a strong passion to help others see the beauty and awesomeness of math. I will not force you to love math, instead, I will guide you through the challenging parts and help you to see the big picture, hopefully strengthening critical thinking and problem solving skills. I'm ok with my students not liking math, as long as they recognize it is important and necessary and try to work through problems.

I started my career teaching chemistry (after earning a PhD in chemistry). I always obtained among the highest student ratings in my department for my teaching. I think more telling though, was that I rarely had an office hour where no students showed up. Often, I'd hold my office hours in a seminar room, in order to have enough room for the 5-10 students who attended. I loved working with students in smaller groups, where I could identify each individual student's barriers and devise a plan to help them overcome those barriers and achieve their goals.

I want to help my students to the best of my ability. I will often use the student's class notes or handouts to best match the vocabulary and level of learning that is done in class. I welcome any feedback, goals, or resources that my students want to use to direct our lessons. I look forward to working with you to achieve your math/chemistry goals. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or want to schedule a lesson.
