My name is Zachery. I began tutoring through my undergraduate university in 2007, making appointments with fellow students to assist them with understanding concepts and answering homework questions. I soon discovered that I enjoyed learning how each student approaches problems, as well as showing students that they are capable of thinking mathematically (especially the ones who incorrectly believed they were too stupid to “get” math.) I continued tutoring through the university and also began working as a freelance tutor in the community until I graduated in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from MidAmerica Nazarene University.

Afterwards, I spent about five years working at the Math Resource Center at Johnson County Community College (JCCC). This center is a fast-paced environment where students from a variety of math courses come to seek help with their coursework. It was not unusual for me to move from one student working on Pre-Algebra, to another working on Calculus II, to yet another working on Trigonometry, all in the span of a few minutes, depending on how much help each student needed. Being exposed to thousands of different students, each with their own unique learning style, allowed me to become proficient at listening to each person and identifying with how they were thinking through a concept. This usually involves me asking questions of the student to discern what they already understand. Once I could relate to where they were in the learning process, I was able to craft a guided explanation, if needed, or ask further questions to lead them to the right answer. Some semesters, I held supplemental study sessions for groups of students in select courses at the college, where we discussed and expounded on ideas introduced in the lecture. Furthermore, I taught College Algebra for two semesters as an adjunct professor at MidAmerica Nazarene University, as well as for three semesters as a graduate teaching assistant at Oklahoma State University. My insights into being an instructor have enhanced my ability to counsel students as a tutor.

Today, I continue to work at the Math Resource Center at JCCC. Over the course of more than a decade, I have gained lots of experience in a variety of roles: student, tutor, and teacher. I have learned that students do best when they are actively engaged in their own learning process, and to that end, I encourage those I work with to write things out, ask questions, and identify patterns—not only in the material they are studying, but also in their own thought processes. I also help students to adopt good study habits and to utilize all of the resources available to them in their courses.

I specialize in working with high school, college, and adult learners, and in subjects including Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, and Calculus. I have helped thousands of students, and I would be delighted to help you, too! Whether you are frustrated and struggling, or you just want to take your understanding to the next level, please contact me if you have any questions or wish to schedule an appointment.
