I have been teaching 1st grade full-time for 5 years and have been in the classroom for 9 years total. I love seeing students gain confidence in their abilities by moving at a challenging yet attainable pace. Along with teaching, I have worked with individual students and small groups on and off for 5 years.

I have taught a variety of math topics as well as provided individualized math instruction to struggling learners.

Using a variety of texts, reading should be a balanced approach of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. This is the approach that guides my instruction.

I use various strategies for teaching words including phonics and spelling patterns. Systematic and consistent handwriting practice is key to success.

Teaching reading using phonics has been a key to my reading curriculum that I use in my classroom. Teaching students to find the patterns in words will help them become a more fluent reader and speller.

I have always had a passion in helping students learn. It is my goal to move students forward in their academic growth!

Handwriting

I am highly qualified to teach handwriting as I currently teach 1st grade where handwriting is emphasized to a great degree. I understand the importance of setting young learners up for success and with good habits. I believe that consistency and repetition are vital components to helping students write legibly and is pivotal to helping them succeed in all areas of the curriculum. Using various methods (paper/pencil, technology and analogies) helps keep student motivation up and has proven to be successful with my students.
Phonics,

Phonics

As a first grade teacher, I know that fidelity and consistency with teaching phonics is pivotal in helping students become fluent readers. Helping students recognize the patterns in words helps them develop a strong foundation that will give them the strategies for decoding unknown words. With the use of blending, decoding, sorting and contextual reading of texts have all proven to be effective in helping all of my students reach a higher level than where they started from. I take a very structured and developmental approach to helping my young readers achieve.

Wonderful tutor

Sheri was able to quickly identify some of the issues my daughter was having with handwriting. She helped her correct those issues in a fun way.
