About Amanda

Being the oldest of seven kids, teaching has always come naturally for me, but I really did not know I wanted to be a teacher until senior year of high school. I had an internship in a kindergarten classroom. The first semester I was there I did not think I would enjoy teaching. The second semester completely changed my mind. I watched those kids light up when they realized they could read, and accomplish so many other things. It was so exciting to see them grow. They also were so excited to share their learning with me and tell me all about what was going on in their lives. At the end of my internship, I knew that I wanted to teach so I could make a difference in the lives of my students.

After graduating from the University of Kansas, I began my teaching career in Emporia, KS. I taught 3rd grade for 2 years and loved it. I worked with students from all different backgrounds, with a variety of learning needs. I enjoyed building relationships and helping them achieve success. The most rewarding thing was to see a student who was struggling, finally grasp a concept. My students also taught me several lessons as well. I learned how important it was to make sure my students knew that I believed in them. I also learned that sometimes all they need is for someone to listen. The biggest lesson I learned was that students want what they are learning to be relevant to their lives. They want to know why it is important to learn each concept.

I worked to design lesson plans that were appropriate for my students. We also spent time building vocabulary knowledge and practicing fluency skills, so my students would comprehend the text better. I required my students to read the texts multiple times, and we worked to use evidence from the text to support our ideas about a subject. The students would often complete a graphic organizer or some kind of worksheet to help them summarize their learning. I also worked closely with other teachers to provide reading interventions for all students.

I was trained throughout college using the Common Core Standards. When I taught in Emporia, we designed curriculum and lesson plans to meet the rigor required of the Common Core standards.

During college, I had multiple opportunities to spend time teaching in the elementary classroom. Once I graduate, I received my teaching license for K-6. I also have an endorsement to help students who have English as a second language. I taught all subject areas for 2 years in Emporia. I then substitute taught in multiple grade levels in the Olathe and Shawnee Mission school districts.

I gave students phonics assessment to determine what skills they needed. I worked with small groups of students to target specific phonics skills. I would teach them the skill and they would practice by reading real and nonsense words, playing games, and reading books that focused on the specific skill. After they had learned the skill, they were given multiple opportunities to practice on their own to help retain their knowledge.

If your student is struggling in school or you feel they need extra support, I would love to help. I will work with your student to create engaging lessons and activities that help them to succeed in their academics. I can provide letters of reference and a resume if needed. I look forward to getting to know you and your student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I was trained on the Common Core Standards while attending college. I taught for 2 years in a school that designed curriculum and lesson plans to meet the rigor of the standards. Lessons included student led discussions, grade level appropriate texts, and a variety of math strategies.

Elementary (K-6th)

I received a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. I am a certified K-6 teacher. I taught 3rd grade for 2 years and substitute taught in multiple grade levels for the last year.

Elementary Math

I'm a certified K-6 teacher. I participated in a 2 week math training course. I taught 3rd grade for 2 years, and substitute taught for multiple grade levels.

Phonics

We had a strong focus on phonics in my previous school. I learned how to administer a phonics assessment to determine which skills students needed to learn. I then worked with specific students on a particular phonics skill, until they demonstrated mastery. Students were taught the skill, read real and nonsense words, played games, completed word sorts and read text the skill focus. Students were then given multiple opportunities to practice the skill on an independent level to help maintain mastery.
