About Beth

Hi! My name is Beth and I have been an elementary educator for 6 years. I have been a little all over the place. I started off student teaching Kindergarten in San Antonio, TX. After my student teaching, I received a third grade position. I stayed in San Antonio for two years teaching 3rd grade when I decided it was time for me to go back to Illinois, my hometown. I then continued working in 3rd grade for another 3 years in Illinois. Throughout that time, I met my husband. His job moved us to Kansas where I landed an AM Kindergarten position in Blue Valley. This year, I am fortunate to move to full time 2nd grade at the same school.

Throughout my years of teaching, I have always tutored. I have tutored my own students before and after school throughout the school year. When summer approaches, I offer to do private tutoring usually at the public library. I LOVE to tutor. It really gives me a special opportunity to watch students grow in their learning. I feel I can get so much done with a child when it is one on one instruction.

My experience is in early childhood and elementary education. I feel my strengths in teaching are reading and math. I love to dig into a good book with a students and really explore all the author and illustrator have in store for us. I also love to teach young children grammar and phonics which are the essential building blocks in reading. Math has always been one of my favorite students as a child and teacher. Math is a great subject to really see the lightbulb go off in a child's head. There are so many tricks that can help a child really understand different math concepts.

I LOVE reading as an adult. I believe that when a child sees their teacher is engaged in reading it makes them want that love for reading. In 3rd grade, it is essential to teach students reading skills. I have many years of working with students on their reading skills to help them better comprehend a text. I also have worked with all ages no writing and grammar skills. I really love to teach writing and grammar through text. What better way to learn about writing then to dig into a good book with an experienced writer?

As a student math was always my favorite subject. I loved how in many math concepts you can learn a trick to make it easier. I always found math like a puzzle that I had to figure out. Working in many different schools and grade levels has helped me learn an assortment of strategies to help your child with math. I love teaching basic numeral concepts, addition/subtraction, multiplication/division, and story problems. I love teaching my student songs that stick in their mind to help with different concepts.

Early childhood and Elementary grade levels are the most important grades to teach phonics. I have worked with many different students of different levels teaching them the basic phonics. When a student understand the phonic rules then their reading begins to approve.

I really hope you will contact me to tutor you. We will have SO much fun. I love bringing fun games and activities to my tutoring lessons. Let me know what you need help in, and I would love to help you grow and succeed on your learning path.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am qualified to tutor in Elementary (K-6) because I have taught Kindergarten for a year and 3rd grade for 5 years. I went to Illinois State University and received my bachelors in Early Childhood Education. I then went back to school at Olivet Nazarene and received my Elementary Education Certification. I have tutored students of all different ages ranging from preschool to 4th grade.

Handwriting

I have taught several years in 3rd grade where we worked on cursive writing. I also found myself teaching students the basic print writing that was missed in the previous grade levels. I also taught Kindergarten where it all begins. I taught my students how to hold a pencil with the correct grip and form letters correctly. Handwriting is such an important skill that is overlooked in education.

Phonics

I have taught several years in 3rd grade and Kindergarten where I worked with strong phonics programs such as Words Their Way and Lead 21. Both programs break apart the essential phonic skills that are essential when learning to read. I have helped a variety of students who struggled with reading. I went back to the basics and taught them phonic skills to help them sound out words and phonic rules to help them when it came to reading. I saw great improvement with students' spelling when they began to understand phonics.

Reading

I have taught reading skills as young as Kindergarten working with letters, sounds, blends and sight words all the way to 3rd grade working on reading skills such as comprehension, summarizing, inferring etc.
