I'm an enthusiastic, loyal and hard-working teacher with over 20 years experience! I have a long tradition of great rapport with everyone from young kids to adults. Have helped kids learn to read, gain confidence and feel like they can succeed! Presently I work for the school district in addition to after school programs specializing in tutoring and helping elementary school age kids. I have a genuine love of teaching and watching kids grow and learn. Also I have a personal love of reading, music, the arts, cooking, gardening and being with my family.
I have been teaching since I graduated college - beginning with teaching Hebrew School to third graders three days a week at an after-school supplementary program. I traveled to Israel and attended University there obtaining a degree is teaching English as a second language. I was an English teacher there for 2 years and then moved back to America. I have continued teaching in after school supplementary programs and have worked with Sylvan Learning Center for over 5 years. I love helping students learn, succeed and grow academically! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Since Kansas introduced the common core two years ago, I have been part of that implementation at the elementary school level. I work with all grade levels K through sixth and assist in all areas at school. I consider myself extremely familiar with he common core and its demands.
I have worked in an elementary school for the last six years. Also, I have been employed as a private tutor for the last eight years. I have worked with students as young as pre-k all the way to high school seniors. Prior to that. Taught English as a second language abroad to middle and high school students. I have watched children who could not read sight words move to being able to read at grade level with the right support and encouragement. I have a double BA as well as certification in teaching English as a second language.
I have taught from the program "Handwriting without Tears" for over five years. I was trained through a prescribed program. I assist with cursive handwriting currently at the fifth grade level.
I have taught Hebrew in supplemental schools for over 20 years. I lived in Israel for five years where I taught English as a second language and also studied Hebrew while there. I have experience teaching both adults and children in the Hebrew language.
I have worked with students of all ages as a reading teacher from elementary school all the way to high school. I have assisted students with learning issues and behavioral challenges. I try to make learning the fundamentals fun and enjoy incorporating different strategies to increase fluency. In order to support the learning of phonics I incorporate many tools including leveled readers, flash cards and games.
I have worked for the last 8 years as a tutor helping students improve their study skills. I have used a prescribed program but am very flexible and understand the demands of students from elementary age to high school. Most students stay organized using their nouns tools but I can also incorporate pencil and paper to help students excel at their studying habits.
