I have been working in education, in some capacity, for about 13 years. I started off doing volunteer aide work in high school with special education students. During college, I observed and taught classes for World and American History classes. For my student teaching experience, I taught 8th grade U.S. History; I have been working as a middle school Social Studies teacher for the last four years. In my classroom, my students took a very hands-on approach to studying history. My curriculum was research based and the students had to find information on their own, question the validity of the sources they were coming across, and then present the information to the class in whichever format they chose. I firmly believe in not giving answers to questions, but pushing students to reach the answers on his or her own and guiding them along in the process. This will not be any different while I tutor. Social Studies is rarely a subject with a concrete answer, there are so many different points of views and twists throughout history. I believe when Social Studies is approached from that method of teaching, the subject itself becomes much more interesting to students.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
