About Benjamin

I have over 4 years of ESL teaching experience overseas in Asia, from 2010 to 2015. Additionally, I was a Pre-Calculus Math Tutor and Music Teacher for a brief period of time at an international school overseas.

Now back in the USA, I am nearing the end of my 3rd B.S. Major, in Computer Science with 48 of 60 credits completed and current GPA of 3.91, carrying hands-on knowledge of full-stack LAMP web development and fundamental knowledge of data structures and algorithms with projects in C/C++.

I currently work part-time for a startup company as their web developer and Android app developer. I thoroughly enjoy explaining what I have learned, and love to combine my knowledge and teaching experience.

I enjoy making music on violin, guitar, and also wish I could play the piano better. I really enjoyed high school and college coursework in music theory as well as college orchestra during my first B.S. degree program. For my first B.S., at University of Northwestern, St. Paul, I majored in Youth Ministries, with Music Minor (including college level private violin lessons). I compose music by ear, but knowledge of music theory can really help fill in the gaps. I have always considered myself to be creative, and hope that through creative teaching, I will inspire creativity in my students and encourage them to meet their full potential!

From high school through college, I have taken courses covering Triganometry, Algebra, Algebra-based statistics, Calculus, and Discrete Math. Algorithms coursework in my Computer Science degree program specifically exercised my knowledge of Algebra (powers, exponents, solving for variables) as well as the concept of summations. I also briefly tutored a Pre-Calculus high school student shortly after I graduated from high school.

I have over 4 years of experience as an ESL teacher. From 2010-2012, I taught ESL to K-6 students at a language institute in South Korea. From 2013-2015, I also taught ESL to K-6 students at a language institute in China. As a child growing up in Papua New Guinea, I also personally experienced what it is like to learn a new language, so I can really sympathize with the challenges often present themselves in the language learning process.

I am nearing the end of my second undergraduate degree program to obtain a B.S. in Computer Science. I am currently enrolled at Oregon State University through their post-bacchaleurette degree program, with 3 courses remaining. I recently joined a startup company as their web developer and Android developer and enjoy applying some of the skills I have learned to solve real-world problems. My coursework has involved full-stack LAMP development, small projects in C and C++, and some command-line scripting, among other things.

I began learning the violin in 2nd grade through the Suzuki (TM) Violin Method, which gave me a great foundation for learning to play by ear. Part of my Music Minor involved coursework specifically focused on ear training, private violin lessons, and participation as a violinist in college orchestra. Since then, I have enjoyed playing violin in a local Twin Cities, MN band (2008-2010) and have played at weddings and special music during church services. I have composed by ear and recorded original music combining violin, guitar, piano, and vocals.

For me, teaching is very rewarding, and I believe learning should be too. I hope to hear from you and look forward to working with you. It should be a rewarding experience for both of us!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
