About Carol

I have both a BS and an MS in chemical engineering from the University of Kansas. I taught sophomore level classes at the University as an adjunct instructor. I have also been an instructor in the department of Chemical and Petroleum engineering at the University of Kansas, where I developed my own curriculum and exam material. I have also taught horseback riding lessons and been a 4H volunteer, leading the dog training sessions.

I have completed 18 hours of college math coursework plus more in chemical engineering classes. But what I do best is break math down into concepts and thinking about the problem. So, my students don't have to memorize formulas, they only need to know the basic rules. From application of those basic rules, you can get anywhere you need to go mathematically. I teach people how to think and how to solve a problem, not just use a formula.

I have over 30 hours of college chemistry and many hours of biology as well. I worked in the field for 15+ years applying that knowledge as well. I am really good at relating the abstract concepts into real life. Although you must memorize some things in chemistry and biology, I strive to teach critical thinking and application of what they know for problem solving.

I have a solid academic background blended with the application of it in everyday life. I am a lifelong learner, and love to learn and I love to help people from middle school and older also keep learning!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemical Engineering

I have both a BS and an MS in chemical engineering from the University of Kansas. I taught sophomore level classes at the University as an adjunct instructor when professors were on sabbatical. I have over 35 years of engineering experience--15 years working for a large manufacturing firm and another 20 working for a company my husband and I started. I understand the breadth and depth of knowledge required for the degree.
