About Jonathan

I am absolutely fascinated by the English language and have spent my academic career studying it. Being able to share that fascination is one of the things I enjoy most about teaching. However, I know many people, no matter their walk in life, struggle with the intricacies and utter confusion which goes hand and hand with communicating in (arguably) the most complicated language in the world.

I have a life-long interest in teaching. After scoring a 31 on my English ACTs when I was 17, I worked as a para-educator in special needs classrooms and a substitute teacher for emotionally disturbed adolescents. During my graduate program, Having taught both freshman composition and introductory research writing at Pittsburg State University, I have a good grasp of what it takes to succeed at the post-secondary level. However, I am aware that 1-on-1 attention in academic settings is lacking, and nearly all students benefit from education outside of the classroom.

In 2015 I graduated on the Dean's List (summa cum laude) with my Masters of Arts and my wife and I are settling in a new area. I am eager to help students achieve their goals and am looking forward to working with any student, young or old, looking to succeed in the academic world. In particular, I excel at argumentative writing, research writing, and literature (particularly in poetry and the 18th century). I offer tutoring for the ACT and GRE as well as any grade level, including post-secondary.

I prefer to push my students to the limit of their abilities and encourage critical thinking for problem solving. I dislike easy solutions and will not simply give students the answers (so don't ask!). The key to any successful tutoring session is the continuation of learning after the tutor is gone, and I will provide assignments to assist in that continuation.

I am available for tutoring from 8-8 most days and am comfortable with both face-to-face and online sessions (though I find the former to be more effective). I am currently charging $40 per hour for both types of sessions until my time is full.

Please feel free to ask questions if you would like to know more about me or my services. I look forward to helping you succeed at English!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
