About Jerry

Teaching in many levels and in many forms has always been a part of my life. As a graduate student, I taught general chemistry and analytical chemistry. While serving the U.S. Army, I taught basic math to enlisted men and nuclear physics topics to officers. I also taught chemistry as an adjunct professor at a near-by community college. After the service I spent seven years on the faculty of a small liberal arts college teaching general chemistry and analytical chemistry. As a member of management of several pharmaceutical firms I was responsible for quality control laboratories and took on any teaching tasks that I could. Also, when consistent with my schedule, I taught general chemistry as an adjunct professor at the local community college. Over the past 20 years, as a consultant, teaching seminars and, more recently, webinars has been a big part of my work. I also enjoyed teaching sessions on “Kitchen Chemistry” to elementary school students. I was recognized as the Best Presenter of the Year by the Institute of Validation Technology in 2007.

For me there has always been a thrill to teaching. It gives me great satisfaction when a student grasps a topic or concept that has been a challenge. Since most math and science is related to solving problems, I generally approach my tutoring by helping the student recognize what s/he already knows that can be applied to the problem and then help him/her apply this knowledge to the problem at hand.

I specialize in helping students in chemistry, physics, mathematics, algebra and calculus.

Science and math present a challenge to some students. In many cases it is because the student has had limited exposure to the topic and has not had the need for a disciplined approach that the subject requires or, the student is struck with awe with these “techy” subjects. All students are capable of understanding science and math. I have the skill that can instill the confidence that the student can expand his/her knowledge and be successful in any subject that challenges them today.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I have been a member of Toastmaster International clubs for more than 30 years. Most of the time I have been a member of more than one club at any time. I have also competed in a number of Toastmaster sponsored speech contests. I was voted the Best Speaker of the Year 2008 by the Institute of Validation Technology.
