About Janene

Bio

With a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, I have mastered a variety of math and science subjects, and I enjoy helping others grasp those same concepts. Through teaching large college classes, tutoring one-on-one, and grading assignments, I have learned to look at problems and concepts from many different angles. This skill allows me to teach you the way you learn--whatever those learning styles may be.

Much of teaching involves answering the question, “why?”: why does one approach work, while a similar one gives the wrong answer? Why can I ignore a force like gravity in some situations, but not in others? By addressing these questions together, we’ll work to prepare you for the problems you’ll come across as you study math, science, or engineering, and beyond.

Math

Civil Engineering,

Civil Engineering

I have a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and have experience teaching, tutoring, and grading Statics and Dynamics (sometimes called Basic Mechanics I and II), courses which are fundamental to both Civil and Mechanical Engineering. I can also tutor Mechanics of Materials or advanced math courses required for Civil Engineering.
Mechanical Engineering,

Mechanical Engineering

I have a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and have experience teaching or tutoring statics, dynamics, and heat transfer courses as a university TA. I have a strong foundation in other mechanical engineering courses, from an introductory CAD course to thermodynamics to controls. Currently, I tutor Statics, Dynamics, Mechanics of Materials, Intro to Electrical Engineering / Linear Circuits, and MV Calculus.

Violin

Violin

I have been playing violin for over 20 years and have a solid foundation in music theory. In my teaching, I use aspects of the Suzuki Method, such as an emphasis on listening to the pieces, as well as exercises and note-reading used in traditional instruction methods. In addition, I work to find music that will interest and inspire the violin student, whether that means a Christmas song, or a tune from a favorite Disney movie.

Great step-by-step

I suddenly felt unsure the day before my mechanics of materials test, so I contacted Janene. She was very helpful and went through different ways of solving/thinking about a problem when I got stuck. I feel a lot better about my test material now.

Very knowledgeable and thoughtful approach

My high school sophomore was having a difficult time understanding the common core concepts as taught by her math teacher. Janene has been able to break down the steps in geometry and trigonometry to help my daughter understand and succeed. For me, as a parent, it has been easy and pleasant to work with Janene. She is a very kind and dependable person.

Knowledgable, patient, helpful

Janene is awesome!!! She was available right away and tutored me via wyzant online. We had a white board where we could both write on and also were able to video chat (we could see each other on the right). This made things so convenient and she used different colors to make things super clear and I was then able to save all of the slides. I loved being able to be tutored virtually without having to coordinate a meeting time. She knew exactly how to help me with each problem and asked me questions to make me think before just giving me the answer. Overall I am very happy with her teaching style.

Excellent

Janene help me to understand how work can be calculated using different forces and help me to understand the difference between two work total.
