Bethany College (Chemistry and Math)
University of Kansas (Enrolled)
My name is Jacob J. I'm currently a graduate student at KU pursuing my PhD in physical chemistry. I graduated in 2014 from Bethany College with a BA in chemistry and mathematics. While I was at Bethany I tutored extensively through the school and privately as well across a large variety of subjects in mathematics and chemistry. Currently at KU I have taught multiple lab sections over the last two years at a variety of levels in chemistry.
Tutoring is a unique and exciting opportunity for me to help someone in a way that a teacher or professor may never get. It is a great feeling to help a student that may not have had the confidence to approach a teacher with questions and get them to a point where they feel confident in class and can succeed. That moment when the student "gets it" is a great feeling that keeps me excited and makes the student excited as well.
I have an extensive background in Mathematics from high school level through advanced college level. I have tutored math privately and through my undergraduate institution for several years and am open to teaching in a variety of styles for anyone that struggles with math in general.
I teach for KU as a GTA almost every semester and have an extensive background in chemistry. I am open to teaching any level from high school to graduate school level classes. In particular general chemistry, analytical chemistry and physical are some of my favorite subjects to teach.
Anyone that feels like I would be a good fit for what you are looking for please feel free to contact me, day or night. I know that we can figure out the best way to approach your needs and get you to a place where you are confident and comfortable in the classroom! My name is Jacob J. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I took the GRE when I was looking to get into Chemistry Doctoral programs around the country. The two sections on the GRE are distinctly different and difficult in their own right. My math background gives me unique insight into prepping for the math portion while rigorous studying got me through the other portion. I can certainly use this experience to help others wanting an inside look at getting a decent score on the GRE.
I took a class in linear algebra during my time at Bethany College (BA in Math). I tutored all math subjects while I was at school, including linear algebra. Currently I use the concepts of linear algebra in my own programming and research for applications such as fitting and data analysis.
