About Douglas

I have graduate degrees in mathematics and biology and more than 20 years’ experience teaching high school and college students; I have been tutoring for as long, especially in math, science, and writing. My experiences as an educator are diverse, having worked with students from many backgrounds, and I understand that a student’s challenges can be as much about the cultural context and learning atmosphere as about the subject matter. I have taught mainstream Americans, foreign students (both here and abroad), as well as nontraditional students, including those returning to school after a hiatus or those who are the first in their family attending college, and students with different learning styles. If you need assistance putting your studies into context or adapting material to your circumstances and experiences, I can provide guidance and help you develop strategies, complete assignments, undertake projects, and simply take steps to improve your academic and personal success - particularly if your needs include any of these challenges:

Mathematics: I have experience teaching and tutoring students through many levels of math, from remedial basic arithmetic up through calculus. Whether you are math-phobic or comfortable with numbers but unsure of processes, equations, or proofs, I can help you understand quantitative issues in anything from high school math through calculus and statistics. Taking a higher-level math course? Contact me about the course.

Biology, Environmental Science, & Ecology: I am a practicing biologist in these fields and have extensive experience teaching, conducting research, and publishing (with students) in these areas of biology. I can help you if your interests are in any of these fields from the middle school through graduate level.

Test preparation and applications: Are you getting ready to apply to college, to graduate school, for an important job, or an internship? I can help you develop a strategy and prepare for the ACT, SAT or GRE, and can offer guidance in choosing and applying to institutions as well as summer programs, professional jobs, or internships. I have helped many students develop strong applications for colleges, as well as jobs or internships in their profession.

Projects: Are you trying to finish (or start) a senior project, thesis or dissertation? I can help you develop your ideas, tackle analyses, polish your writing, or produce a presentation. Have you stalled on a research project or term paper? I can work with you to successfully complete the task. I have extensive experience guiding students through the practical aspects as well as the creative process of big projects.

I tailor our sessions to your personal circumstances, and look forward to meeting with you to help you tackle your academic challenges.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biostatistics

I have taught biostatistics at two universities.

Discrete Math

I have taken graduate course work in combinatorics, graph theory, and probability. I have conducted research on the application of graph theory to environmental problems and trained undergraduates for this research. I have taught probability at the college-level.
