About Jacob

I'm a chemical and aerospace engineering major at The University of Kansas. I'm in my third year of study. I've completed all of my required engineering math courses with a B+ average in all five of the courses. The courses include engineering calculus one, engineering calc. two, multivariable calculus, linear algebra and differential equations. I've received an International Baccalaureate diploma from Wichita High school East, as well as a high school diploma. I also have advanced coursework in programming Matlab and VBA in excel. I did debate and forensics for four years in high school. Along with my extensive math course load, I've completed physics one (mechanics) and two (electricity, optics, and magnetism). I have experience in basic engineering (statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials). I've tutored sixth and seventh grade math before. I have struggled at times before and know through personal experience where the pitfalls lie, especially when it comes to mathematics. Through that experience I've learned what it takes to be able to achieve an above average grade. Through my years at school I've helped peers and had help from peers and have a grasp where students' struggles come from. Most of these stem from the vernacular used in the book, or by the teacher, peer pressure into thinking a subject is too complicated or difficult, or that the teacher believes that some information is to be tacitly understood, when in actuality that information that needs to be expressed. I also understand that a book normally is unable to teach as well as another person. With these lessons in mind I'll be able to engage your student in the subject matter and improve their attitude and understanding of the material. That's what I like about helping others is seeing them succeed.

I've been there and done it, and now I'm coming back again. I understand that math is best understood from another person and that many have trouble in mentally picturing what is going on or what exactly is being asked. However, I've learned to improve my own math skills and can help improve yours or your student's as well.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

I've passed Calc 122 at the University of Kansas with the grade of an A. I've also successfully completed math 290, math 220 and vector calc (calc 3), with a grade of a B+. I have old exams and assignments to help and student who is struggling with the course.

Explanatory, Understanding, and Knowledgeable — I worked with Jacob through the Online Tutoring Tool and it was very effective. He took me step by step to walk me through maximization/minimization problems and it didn't take long for me to confidently understand and solve these problems on my own. He is clear in explaining the steps and any questions I had. He is a great tutor and I look forward to future sessions with him. ...
