About Anthony

My teaching philosophy and practice empowers students; I ask them to confidently know that they have the capabilities to do the work it takes to succeed. It is my belief that we are all able to be self-sufficient, forward and critically-thinking individuals; this knowledge can be unlocked through constant encouragement and learning ways to succeed.

I have over seven years of tutoring experience with middle and high school students as well as four years of experience teaching and tutoring college students. I have experience in tutoring English, philosophy, study skills and public speech. I specialize in teaching ways of literary analysis. Much of my intensive and fulfilling work is in teaching students how to write.

Most of my academic training is in the study of literature and writing. During my undergraduate career at Fort Valley State University, I served as a writing consultant for the Center of Tutorial Services and teaching assistant of English. I was also a Teaching Fellow of English at Georgia College and State University. I am starting a doctoral program at University of Kansas in that fall 2016.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Literature

I specialize in U.S. literature and poetry. Working with me will allow you to not only learn how to read and write about literature but you can also read a diverse array of books.

Public Speaking

Through my experience and leadership in Toastmasters during my undergraduate career I mentored many students to conquer their anxieties and struggles with public speaking. I not only did one-on-one mentorship with members of the FVSU Toastmasters Club, I also created and facilitated many workshops about public speaking and speech writing techniques. In my tutoring, I would incorporate this knowledge to guide my student.

Reading

I have subject competency in reading, writing and literacy. My two degrees in English should suffice for this, along with my teaching experience in English. Much of what I do in the classroom is demonstrating ways to read information to students. This could be easily transferable in this space.
