About Brian

I am a professionally trained and active composer and church musician, tutor music theory at all levels--including the graduate level. I have also taught this subject in a university setting to both undergraduates and graduate students. I also teach music composition privately via a two-pronged method, focusing on counterpoint study and coaching the student on his or her original works. I have a very wide variety of musical experience as a composer, conductor and speaker.

I have a Doctorate in Musical Arts in Composition from the University of Kansas. My Baccalaureate and Masters degree are from the University of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, respectively. My music is published by ILP Music and Alliance Publications and has been recorded on two professional CDs: Vocalise - Instrumental and Vocal Music of Brian J. Nelson (Nelson Music – 2010) and Responsorial Psalms for Advent and Christmas (Nelson Music – 2009).

I also have extensive writing and computer skills, developed and honed through years of education and professional experience. I am equally capable in tutoring these subjects.

My teaching approach is often described as encouraging and friendly, but also thorough and detail-oriented. My verbal and interpersonal skills are excellent and well-suited to the one-on-one tutoring setting. I am genuinely interested in my students. I understand that their success is my success. I am thus highly-motivated to assist my students in achieving their goals and will put forth only my very best efforts on their behalf.

I invite you to put my training and experience to work for you as you advance toward your educational and professional goals. You will not be disappointed in the results!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

As noted in the free response section of my profile, I have a D.M.A. (Doctorate in Music Composition from the University of Kansas and have taught Music Theory and Counterpoint in a classroom setting to both graduate students and undergrads. I have taught a number of students over the years in a private lesson setting. Currently I am teaching a former graduate student colleague--now a professor at a state university in Colorado--in this subject. We meet every two weeks by Skyper. I am also very passionate about this field, as I view it as my vocation in life. My professional portfolio and resume are available upon request.

Ear Training

I am an active professional composer and skilled singer, and choral conductor, all of which involve an innate ability in this area, the constant honing of this ability and the the ability to convey this skill to others. I have taught ear-training to graduate students in a graduate theory review course at the University of Kansas. I also rehearse and conduct three choirs each week in my job as a church musician. A significant portion of this work involves the teaching and clarifying of ear-training skills and concepts.

Macintosh

My qualifications in this area come from approximately twenty years of Mac use on both the personal and professional level. This has been across a wide variety of software programs including MS Office, Finale, Sibelius, Logic, Quicken/Quickbooks, Dream Weaver and many others. In light of my teaching skills in general,--especially my verbal skills and sense of empathy for those struggling with any subject--I am confident I can impart this knowledge and experience with the Mac OS effectively in the tutoring setting.

Music History

I have a DMA in Music Composition from the University of Kansas. Taken together with my undergraduate and Masters degrees, this course of education involved extensive training and evaluation in Music History, both in the classroom setting and in oral and written comprehensive examinations.

Should an area of Music History arise with which I am not intimately familiar, I have developed the research skills to quickly familiarize myself with the subject, integrate it into the larger spectrum of my knowledge, and convey it effectively to students in the tutoring setting.

Sight Singing

I have taught sight-singing--in the broader context of ear-training--to graduate students in a music theory review course at the University of Kansas. I am an active professional composer and skilled singer, and choral conductor, all of which involve an innate ability in this area, the constant honing of this ability and the the ability to convey this skill to others.
