About Jeff

I enjoy making math and science more fun and understandable for middle school, high school, and college students. I graduated in spring '08 with a BS in Physics and Math and in spring '10 with a Master's in Engineering from Colorado School of Mines. I was the physics department tutor and supplemental instructor in college for three and a half years and am currently working for an engineering design firm. As of January 2016, I now have 11 years of tutoring experience!

I have not always been very organized and efficient, but throughout my school and professional experience I have had to learn to stay organized and on top of my workload. I want to pass these real world applications and skills to younger students and teach them how to succeed in school and their careers afterward.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I have helped many students with all levels of college math, including Algebra 2.

AutoCAD

In my position as an engineer, I regularly create and modify AutoCad drawings. The software that I am most comfortable with is AutoCAD LT 2008 and am familiar with most 2D commands. I have also used SolidWorks and ProEngineer and have about the same level of proficiency in all of those software programs.

Calculus

I have been tutoring calculus for ten years and the majority of my recent students were in calculus or calc 2.

Cooking

I have taught myself many cooking skills and as with any hobby continue to expand my skill set. I am particularly good at grilling and smoking not just meat, but vegetables as well. I have also started growing most of our own food because the end product is only as good as the ingredients and the best way to assure quality ingredients is to grow it yourself. I am starting to do cheese making and canning as well.

Differential Equations

I took Differential Equations when earning my Physics degree and have helped several students with the class since then. I have also revisited many of the concepts in my advanced physics and engineering classes so I have a thorough knowledge of the material and its applications.

Discrete Math

I completed a discrete mathematics course at Washburn as part of my undergraduate mathematics minor. I took the class in the spring of 2006. I have helped several students with the course since then and have revisited many of the concepts in my further studies.

Football

I received a full-ride scholarship to Washburn University for football where I was an All-Conference Offensive Lineman. I started three of my four years there, we participated in the Division 2 national playoffs twice and won our conference once in those four years.

Linear Algebra

I took Linear Algebra while completing my Physics degree for credit towards a Math minor. I have used the material several times since then in my advanced Physics and Engineering courses and have tutored the subject a couple times as well.

Mathematica

I have had several courses in Mathematica while completing my Physics and Engineering degrees. I have used it to do everything from making graphs and animations, to solving differential equations using the finite difference method. I am very fluent in using the visualization capabilities of the program as well as writing iterative code to use computational methods to solve advanced math problems.

Study Skills

I was trained as a Study Skills teacher during my employment at a tutoring center and have helped many students with this subject. I have material and curricula picked out to utilize in lessons to help students become more efficient learners. I can help them become more organized, prepare for tests, manage test anxiety, prioritize, and develop time management skills.

Teaches how to succeed!! — My high school daughter has had difficulty with math since elementary school. She has had many tutors, but has been the most successful with Jeff. In addition to tutoring the student the principles and mechanics of math, he truly gets to know the student and what other factors may be inhibiting the student's success. For example, Jeff discovered my daughter had test anxiety and helped her work thr ...
