Greetings,

I'm an eager tutor, copy editor, and discussion partner from the US but I've mostly been abroad since 2006, first in Germany and then Asia. I received my B.A. in International Studies in 2007, my M.B.A. in 2010, and I was in a PhD in management program for 8 1/2 years.

My specialization was finance, but I focused on how cultural dimensions from researchers such as Hofstede, Minkov, and Bond related to business and finance. I took on finance as a challenge and to help with future employment opportunities and then I tied it in--as much as possible--with my interest in international studies. I took a year of intensive Chinese language coursework while doing my M.B.A. I also study French and I used it, along with German, for readings for my PhD. I love to translate/transcribe German to English and I can, if needed, translate English to German.

I began tutoring English part-time in 2004. I received a 120 hour TESOL certificate in 2013. I can tutor lower-level speakers, but I'm best helping with IELTS, TOEFL, and Aviation English. I'm also an eager discussion partner and aid for public speaking.

I received an A in Macroeconomic Analysis in the Fall of 2009 while completing my M.B.A. and had Current Economic Analysis waived due to prior undergraduate economic and accounting coursework. My PhD studies have involved years of analyzing, comparing, and contrasting constructs, measures, and models. They have also instilled in me a much greater respect for the merits of practicality, abstraction, holism, deduction and empiricism as well as comparing, contrasting, and synthesizing works. I enjoy learning and helping others learn how to reduce complex phenomena into measurable constructs and use multiple measures to come up with more useful, reliable, valid, and holistic understandings.

Business,

Business

I have an M.B.A. and I was completing a specialization in finance before I decided to begin a PhD. My PhD. studies were also in management--with a specialization in finance, but I focused primarily on how cultural dimensions, such as those of Hofstede, Minkov, and Bond, might relate to finance. My Bachelor of Arts was in International Studies, but I took economics, business, finance, business law, and accounting courses to fulfill various requirements for my degree and out of personal interest. I have also tutored, Business English for several years and have tutored students, albeit not regularly, in various management courses.
Macroeconomics,

Macroeconomics

I received an A in Macroeconomic analysis while I was doing my M.B.A. I also took macroeconomics as an undergraduate student. Furthermore, Macroeconomics related to my doctoral studies in management and my undergraduate major in international studies.
Marketing,

Marketing

I have studied cultural dimensions, which have been applied to marketing by Marieke de Mooij and others, for many years. I have written papers on them. I also have also taken a graduate level marketing class. I have also used many behavioral economics and behavioral finance articles. These disciplines often draw on concepts from marketing. My studies have been interdisciplinary and have introduced me to many sociological, psychological, and organizational concepts that may be applied to marketing. I regularly read German and French articles and have lived abroad for 14 years--most of this time in Asia. This has helped me with understanding cultural differences that are important to marketing. I've also engaged in multiple cultural exchange programs.
Public Speaking,

Public Speaking

One of my main goals as someone who has taught English as a second language for several years was to prepare people to give presentations. Business people and lecturers wishing to attend conferences internationally-or who wished to speak with international audiences-needed this help. I also helped people edit the presentations there were to give. Another goal was to help people overcome the fear of public speaking. Beyond this, self introductions are a standard part of ESL curricula.

German,

German

I studied in Germany for the last year of my undergraduate degree and I had taken five or six German courses before that. In Germany, I took four months of intensive coursework in German and also a German civilization course in German. I then studied German by myself. I read a short novel several times over immediately after graduating and I used a great number of German scholarly journal articles in my PhD. studies. My vocabulary is much higher than most people would expect from a non-native speaker and I probably know a lot of jargon from different fields of research that the average German speaker may not know. That said, I read and listen far more than I write and speak, so I have not had the opportunity to be corrected as much as native speakers of German and long-term residents of Germanophone countries have had. As a result, I may be able to help a lot with difficult texts, but I would be less helpful with areas such as talking about one's house or making small talk.

Reading

Writing annotated bibliographies and literature reviews was a regular part of my PhD. studies. As an interdisciplinarian, I had to pay careful attention to researchers abstracts, introductions, their writing about limitations, their discussions, and their suggestions for future research in order to contextualize the more arcane sections in the body of scholarly journal articles. Learning to pay special attention to word choice and the omission of words allowed me to make sense of articles that used jargon, knowledge, and research methods I was not familiar with.

My PhD. , M.B.A., and International studies were all very interdisciplinary, so I had to familiarize myself with jargon from many disciplines. I look up the etymology of words in dictionaries. I have spent a lot of time learning German and—to a lesser extent—French and Chinese, so I have become familiar with English vocabulary that originated in those languages. I also studied in a professional pilot program for a year-and-a-half and have continued to try to improve my knowledge of vocabulary related to aviation.

I am also happy to help people prepare for writing portions of tests, such as the SAT, IELTS, and TOEFL. My PhD. studies were writing intensive. Writing papers of dozens or more than one hundred pages requires a lot of organization in order to remain coherent and understandable, to not become repetitive, to convey the significance of one's work, and to keep a reader's attention. I had to try to understand or develop complex concepts and then explain those concepts in ways that people who were not knowledgeable about the subject matter could understand. My years studying foreign language have also increased my appreciation for the diversity of ways in which people may express themselves.

My undergraduate major was international studies. I lived in Germany for a year and I have lived across Asia since 2007. Altogether, I have been to 29 countries (as well as 47 U.S. states) and have spent weeks or months in more than half of them. My parents ensured that I took many years of religion courses growing up. Those courses were from a Christian perspective. Since 2007, I have lived in East, Southeast, and South Asia and have picked up some familiarity with Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Islam, Hinduism, etc. I have done this through having friendships with people from these religions, visiting temples and mosques, and asking questions. I'm not a scholar in this discipline, but I have read the bible in its entirety at least seven times. I have read the Analects of Confucius twice, the Tao te Ching several times, the Gita once, and I have read several other texts. I'm neither a specialist, nor a missionary, but I do have a fairly strong knowledge of Christian beliefs, arguments, and doctrines and I also have many years studying cultural dimensions and travelling that help me to compare and contrast beliefs.

In my undergrad international studies major, I took sociology as well as the courses in higher and lower levels of analysis--psychology and anthropology. In my M.B.A. classes in organizational behavior, business, and marketing, I studied material that overlapped with sociology. In my PhD. studies, my research classes and my researched interests overlapped with topics in sociology. I have gained a relatively deep and broad exposure to the social sciences. I'm not a specialist in sociology, but if I have not been exposed to a particular construct, I've probably studied a related construct and would pick it up fairly rapidly.

Excellent teacher!

Wonderful manner of teaching! He is supportive and patient, with great ideas to support your writing. Important part of working with him was that he is always ready to help, leaves comments and suggestions out of meeting time in case some new ideas come up. Strongly suggest!!!

Super Proficient, Kind,Flexible & Patient tutor

5 STAR tutor I have ever met. Chris was willing to review the materials he hadn't covered in a long time in order to help me with the chapters I am having difficulties with. He is really very helpful and knowledgeable. He is also super patient and flexible tutor. Moreover, his fields of specialization also cover most of my modules. I will definitely recommend Chris for your tutoring and I really hope to have much more sessions with Chris in the future! Thanks Chris!!! Highly recommend!!!
