Hello, I’m Shawn Renée H! I’ve been teaching art since 2003 and hold a degree in Art Education from Kansas Wesleyan University, as well as a Master of Arts in Teaching from Friends University. I also earned a certificate from Northwestern University in Chicago in forensic composite portrait drawing. From that experience, I developed a specialized portraiture course for my high school students.

Throughout my teaching career, I’ve worked with students of all ages—from kindergarten through college and adult learners. My curriculum has included drawing in a variety of mediums, painting in oil, acrylic, and watercolor, printmaking, design, photography, and 3D art such as ceramics and sculpture. I especially enjoy teaching the fundamentals of drawing. Many people believe drawing is a special talent you either have or don’t, but it’s really about learning how to see. My students are often amazed at how much they improve by the end of a course.

I tailor each tutoring session to the individual student’s goals—whether that’s preparing for the AP Art History exam, strengthening skills in a chosen medium, or building a portfolio for exhibitions or scholarship applications. I work with students from age five through adulthood and strive to create a supportive, encouraging environment. One-on-one instruction is especially rewarding, and I love celebrating each student’s growth and success.

Art Theory

Art Theory

I have experience teaching basic art theory, the elements and principles of design and art appreciation.
Drawing

Drawing

I have 23 years of experience teaching the fundamentals of drawing to students ages five through adult. We start with the Elements of Design developing essential skills culminating in a self-portrait. Typically, this would be within one semester. I also introduce multiple drawing mediums besides graphite, such as pen and ink, charcoal, marker, pastel, oil pastel and colored pencil. As we progress we begin to mix dry mediums with wet mediums, such as starting with a watercolor wash then using pastel over it. As student skills become more refined, their style becomes evident. At this point, they choose which medium they enjoy best and we take that to the next level and build a portfolio.
Painting

Painting

I have experience teaching watercolor, gouache, tempera, acrylic and oil. I begin with exploration and color theory. Each medium reacts to color in different ways. I introduce difference painting styles that have occurred through out history. My students usually settle on a specific style and painting medium and we develop and refine those skills. For very young children, the curriculum is similar using simpler activities and tempera or watercolor.
