Hello, I’m Shawn Renée H! I’ve been teaching art since 2003 and hold a degree in Art Education from Kansas Wesleyan University, as well as a Master of Arts in Teaching from Friends University. I also earned a certificate from Northwestern University in Chicago in forensic composite portrait drawing. From that experience, I developed a specialized portraiture course for my high school students.
Throughout my teaching career, I’ve worked with students of all ages—from kindergarten through college and adult learners. My curriculum has included drawing in a variety of mediums, painting in oil, acrylic, and watercolor, printmaking, design, photography, and 3D art such as ceramics and sculpture. I especially enjoy teaching the fundamentals of drawing. Many people believe drawing is a special talent you either have or don’t, but it’s really about learning how to see. My students are often amazed at how much they improve by the end of a course.
I tailor each tutoring session to the individual student’s goals—whether that’s preparing for the AP Art History exam, strengthening skills in a chosen medium, or building a portfolio for exhibitions or scholarship applications. I work with students from age five through adulthood and strive to create a supportive, encouraging environment. One-on-one instruction is especially rewarding, and I love celebrating each student’s growth and success.
