Kansas State University (Elementary Education)
I am an elementary education graduate. I have worked as a Paraprofessional for one year and currently work as a math and reading intervention teacher. I have worked with all grades, mostly Kindergarten, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. After school, I help 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students on their homework.
My method of teaching to students consists of being patient with the student and guiding them through the thinking process so that they might come up with the correct answer on their own. Each lesson or sitting, I strive to take on a hands on approach, where students use a manipulative to help them visually see the "why" in the answer. I model the "how" until I feel the student is ready to take on the problem or task on their own, with my guidance. Lastly, I let the student solve or figure out answers on their own.
As far as tutoring in reading. I concentrate on phonics, comprehension, and fluency. Modeling, guiding, and practicing is my method of getting the student familiar and comfortable with a learning task. I am an elementary education graduate. My method of teaching to students
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education (K-6th). I completed my student teaching in a Kindergarten classroom. Last school year, I worked with 4th grade and became very aware and knowledgeable of the 4th grade curriculum. While earning my degree, I completed my practicum courses in a 5th grade classroom, where I planned and conducted writing lessons as well as a lesson on fractions.
With my elementary education degree, I have taken courses where I have gained knowledge and teaching methods on phonics. Currently, I teach phonics to a group of students at an elementary school. I go over the sounds of short and long vowels and give examples of words and passages that include words with those sounds. Along with sounds, I teach inflections, prefixes and suffixes, contractions, abbreviations, letter/word patterns such as cvc and cvce, etc.
