Purdue University (Linguistics)
Thank you for your interest in learning about language! My name is Brandon, and I have been tutoring for more than four years. I graduated from Purdue University in 2015 with a bachelor's degree with distinction. My undergraduate career entailed studying linguistics, Spanish, and literature both in the United States and in Spain. Engaging in honors coursework, studying and living abroad, and earning an outstanding GPA as a first-generation student prove that I know the value of higher-level thinking, hard work, dedication, and an expanded worldview. After graduation, I have taught ESL to students at the elementary level as a profession.
I prepare students in subjects of a broad range including ESL, theoretical linguistics, and the Spanish language. I prefer to consider myself and my student equals because efficacious education requires trust. Because of this, my teaching style is informal and adaptive. Do not think, however, that you will not be challenged. Be confident and clear about what you want to achieve, and we will work together effectively.
The English language is my passion. It is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world yet is so exotic and has been influenced by so many other languages and cultures. The journey to learning English may be daunting, but it is worth the effort. I have tutored English language learners for years and have helped native English speakers gain a deeper understanding of the language they already know so well. Through descriptive and prescriptive lenses, I will show the English language as people actually speak it and as it "should" be spoken.
I know that I may not be a perfect fit for you, so I believe it is fair to meet once without compensation. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
