About Jen

I started tutoring back in 2005. I had just graduated from Saint Mary's of Notre Dame and I was investigating different career choices. I was pulled into substitute teaching which led me to reconnecting with my and my younger sister's former teachers. I began helping them grade writing and other English related projects and coming in as extra help in the classroom. I worked at lot at Cooks Corners, Thomas Jefferson Middle School, and Valparaiso High School. Then a relative asked me to go to Whiting to be a private tutor for a young man with autism in 6th grade. We had a lot of fun using his love of Wrestle Mania to retell stories to prepare us for the Accelerated Reading tests as well as do our math and recreate Ancient Egyptian pyramids! After he relocated to another school, I went over to East Chicago to help Spanish speaking students become more proficient in English. I spent half the day tutoring K-3rd grade students in small groups, then I drove to the West Side Middle School to tutor students one-on-one in whatever subject in which they were having difficulty. I had just applied to Valparaiso University for a Masters in English Language Arts, but I received a phone call when I was walking outside of West Side asking if I would be interested in a new program that was attached to the Masters of English and Communication degree: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

While I was finishing that degree, I was hired as a TESOL instructor by INTERLINK Language Center on VU's campus. I have continued to work there even as I have worked in public education for 3 years. I hold office hours by appointment with my college students, and our one-on-one tutoring sessions usually last an hour. When I don't have INTERLINK classes, I am teaching English as a New Language for grades 7 - 12, as well as a 6 week rotating writing intensive course, as well as a four day rotating creative writing intensive course for all 7th and 8th grade students. Then after school I do one-on-one as well as small group tutoring for English/Language Arts and Social Study courses for grades 7-12. I am also a dance instructor for ages 3 - 18.

I am a licensed professional teacher for grades Pre K-12. I hold MAs in English Studies and Communication, Teaching, and TESOL respectively. I have been teaching English writing, grammar, and reading comprehension for over 5 years.

I absolutely love teaching in any capacity because it is very encouraging to see when a student's hard work pays off! However, now that it's summer, I have a lot of time on my hands. School is out, and so my dance company takes a three month break.I like to stay sharp with my teaching skills by finding people and places that can use my services. During the summer of 2014, I worked for the Duneland YMCA as the assistant to the lead teacher of the 2 year old students. I hope to work with you and your family this summer!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am licensed in general education. I received my Masters of Teaching from Calumet College of Saint Joseph. This is where I also completed my Initial License through their Transition to Teaching program. I also did additional courses to become licensed in middle school as well as high school English/Language Arts. I also passed the English as a New Language (ENL) test in order to obtain the ENL endorsement that ranges from PreK-12.

English

Right now, I teach English Composition courses at Ivy Tech in addition to teaching high school students English. My BA is in English Writing. I understand that each of us teachers look for different qualities in students' writing, but I can help with organization, detail, grammar, and research writing.

ESL/ESOL

I have Masters degrees in TESOL as well as English Studies and Communication. For both, I graduated with honors with the GPA above 3.84. In 2013, I presented my research at INTESOL on language learning for international students with my professor. I have been teaching international students of various ages and proficiencies since 2008.
